No one like her before and no one like her since. Even after all these years, her songs are relevant, and her voice is unequalled.

100% agree. The people who criticized her performance thought her style was at odds with the LSD-induced psychedelic offerings that many of the artists at Monterey Pop favored. I thought she was fantastic. Pure talent doesn't need an impaired audience, and she didn't need to destroy any instruments to get attention.

You HAVE to listen and be mesmerized by her. She pulls you in. Her soul comes right through every word she sings. And those harmonies and melodies are brilliant and only hers.

Getting off the poverty train. She was a truly magnificent musician. Her heartfelt deeply emotional piano playing along with passionate vocals playing together or piano alone and singing alone or with a band. And a songwriter. How lovely. Getting off the poverty train.

Laura Nyro was an enigma. A brilliant songwriter (in December 1969 3 of her pieces made the Billboard top 10. An incredible achievement for someone so young.). As well she was a superb singer herself. And at one time she was drop dead gorgeous. Hollywood, television and Broadway all wanted her but she just plain refused. Instead when she was only 24 she just walked away from the music industry. She would make occasional comebacks, but they would be short term and she would return to her hideout in the Connecticut woods where she passed away in 1997. She was only 49 years old.

I have loved Laura Nyro's music since 1968, when the 5D covered her songs. I hear her talk near the end of this video. A beautiful NY accent, which this southerner loves in a woman. So she didn't like her physical appearance at Monterey Pop. I thought she was gorgeous.

LAura Nyro is one of my top female singer songwriters since I first heard her. She deserves more recogition. You see Amy Winehouse studying her too here. Amazing Poverty Train lives here in Monterey, where I heard she wasn't well-received. She made millions from her songwriting hits covered by so many others. Retired at 21

Whoa. When she starts talking at 15:50 in that interview, you can hear her Bronx accent -- and you suddenly realize that her speaking voice is completely different from what sounds like her "classically trained" singing voice (even though she learned only by singing with friends in tiled bathrooms or tiled walkways in the subways there. That :50 second interview at the end of this video reveals more about the real Laura Nyro than anything else. Yo! Want to know what made Laura Nyro tick? Here it is: born and raised in the Bronx in the 1950s and early 1960s, baby. That's it! "...that is all ye know on Earth. And all ye need to know." --- John Keats.

She recorded a show in 1971 for BBC Television as part of their 'In Concert' series which was televised the same year, but sadly the BBC have confirmed that it's been wiped. I never saw it but apparently it lasted around forty minutes and featured Laura alone at the piano.

This was a policy of the BBC for many years. STUPID. For the last 20 years they have been sending people all over the world to try to get copies of whatever television shows they produced available. They have had some success in Canada and West Africa but still a lot is still missing. One of the exceptions to that policy was Monty Pythons Flying Circus where John Cleese made it clear that he would not allow the erasing of their show. A really smart intelligent man

Channeling Amy Winehouse: segment starting at 2:10 HA! Of course, it would be the other way around! ;-) But who thought of Amy watching this? (Glad she was free to stand and simply sing, but wish she was accompanying herself on the piano here. The pianist here is okay, but nothing like the fire, touch, and more, that Laura brings to her playing!) I'm excited to see the upcoming biopic on Amy, but they need to make one on Laura!!! Surprised, kinda, they haven't, given her manager and then-boyfriend in the 60's was David Geffen! Yes, THAT David Geffen, who went on to start Asylum Records, then Geffen Records, and form SKG studios with Speilberg and Jeffrey Katzenberg. One of the most powerful people in Hollywood at the time. And yes, a HUGE influence on Todd Rundgren, me, and anyone who plays the piano, sings, writes songs, loves music. Gosh, that's a lot of people. Or could be. She's still very obscure. I would say one out of every 50 people I mention her name to have heard of her. If that! Of course, as soon as one starts reeling off all her songs that were hits for others, then the recognition sparks! People, PEOPLE, C'mon People! Behold Laura! Save the Laura!

If she had appeared at Monterey in her comfort zone with her piano, I don’t believe that appearance would have thrown her off her live performance game. My opinion, of course, but she doesn’t seem like herself when doing so, & didn’t feel like herself. A product of what I hear was bad advice the young, inexperienced Laura went with.
