Join us as we explore Portland’s Laurelhurst Park. Nestled in a quiet neighborhood, here you can pause to watch the ducks or spend an afternoon picnicking and playing under the trees. In summer, you might even catch an impromptu Shakespeare performance!

Laurelhurst Park is in Portland’s SE quadrant. It’s what I’d consider the ideal park for a picnic, with wide green lawns under a canopy of big old trees. There are a number of interesting non-native trees here, like redwoods and giant sequoias.
The park’s central feature is Firwood Lake, which is full of ducks. Swimming is not allowed (and for good reason, given all that duck poop!), but we actually filmed this video on two different days because the first day I ran into the duck pond to try to stop a dog from chasing down a duckling. I can attest to the fact that swimming in this body of water is not advisable.
Laurelhurst is a draw for joggers and skateboarders, playground-goers, tennis and pickleball players, dogs and dog people, and, especially, picnickers.
The day we visited, a Shakespeare play was underway, performed as part of the very Portland Practice Shakespeare Festival. Apparently these performances aren’t rehearsed much in advance, so they’re always a bit of a surprise!
