Anyone know what/why Hoagy Carmichael (Cricket) and the woman at the piano were whispering to Lauren Bacall (Slim) while she was singing? Earlier in the film Cricket sings his lyrics to Slim, but now she's singing different lyrics. I wonder if the story is that she's making these lyrics up herself, about her feelings for Steve (Harry), and Cricket is trying to tell her the correct (his) lyrics?

@Jack K they love it. Even as a soprano (my voice only goes higher and higher if I let it) I used to do a deep chest voice as a teenager and just watched all the guys at school get flushed. I cannot guarantee if this is accurate information, but I've read somewhere that they find it sexy. That being said, sweet and more high pitched voices are also delightful - so, as a person who has tried both, I think it all comes down to other's personal preference. But we should all love who we are, no matter what kind of voice we've got. They're all genuinely amazing: soprano, mezzo, alto for women or tenor, baritone and bass for men ^^ and you will find out that if you love what you've got, others will love it too! ❤️

The most legendary person in this scene is not Bogart or Bacall but is in fact the piano player. It's the iconic Hoagy Carmichael who wrote such timeless songs as Georgia on My Mind, As Time Goes By, Stardust, In the Cool Cool Cool of the Evening ... and so many more.

The dark haired woman is speaking in Spanish, but it is mostly drowned out by the music --- towards the end, if you are familiar with the language, you can clearly hear her saying "Mueve la cintura, chica, meuve la Cintura. Ay chamaca!" which roughly translates into "Move that waist, girl, move that waist. Oh, young girl!". It might just be my imagination, but the phrases seem to be uttered in a sensual, longing sort of way.

Andy Williams was the subject of enduring curiosity for one of his earliest forays into screen work. At 16, he was asked to dub Lauren Bacall’s voice in the song “How Little We Know” fin “To Have and Have Not” (1944). Bacall and director Howard Hawks denied that the final cut included Mr. Williams’s voice. “I really wish, now, it had never happened, because now when people ask me if that’s my voice on the screen I have to compromise and say ‘maybe,’ ” he told the Tulsa World in 2000.

This performance ALONE proves she has more talent than these pop stars who can't sing and she's not even a musician. Katy and Rihanna are millionaires yet all their registers are terrible. Fact. Lauren Bacall has an excellent lower register, incorporates vibrato, sings with ease, better interpretation, phrasing that SLAYS their whole career without effort.

@MrJim12341121 Jim, on a side-note, are any Americans just American? Although my bloodline is split in about 100 different ways, I'm English. Not British, not an Englishman of Scottish decent, just 100% English. As for the birds voice; I have to disagree mate, she sounds like a fella! Good looking sort with a geezer's voice!

@Elfinesmom Oh no..I know you weren't saying that she was too you. By today's standards that'd be an issue..a 19 year old Girl in that situation although the way things are going these days, you wonder what would be the big deal? It was a great Hollywood relationship that was amazing...

Until today, I'm so shocked she's only 19 in this movie. She gave off adult-experienced vibe like she's already in her late 20s or early 30s. Face-wise, I can see the youth but her attitude, outfit and her low voice (which I learned later on was due to acting training) gave off very mature and charismatic vibe.

@BlushGush, yes, how could I forget Sophia! And Doris Day. There are a few male stars left - Kirk Douglas, Mickey Rooney, maybe one or two others. When I say movie stars, I'm really thinking of hugely successful ones active in the '30s - '50s. Who else?

She definately was a beauty, but her voice sure is low and... different. I suppose some would really like it, but for me it's just a little strange. Reminds me a little of Kermit singing.

***** So when a girl is 19 she is a young girl? fuck off, that's a woman. And I didn't specifically this video, I meant in general the girl is a REAL WOMAN, as in sophisticated and classy. Not like these girls today that follow like sheep on social media and pull duck faces.
