A tonal wobble in place of vibrato, & an inability to colour & shade the tone for emphasizing phrases. Bravo! Lauri-Volpi! And thank you lorerad for posting this.

Silly? Lauri-Volpi in the 1930s had one of the greatest tenor voices of all time (and maybe the most bright and carrying, according to people who heard him) and Corelli was a huge fan and took lessons with him. He could do anything with his voice, from sweet and delicate to atomic. The video on here of Gli Ugonotti is a great example. Maybe you think it sounds 'silly' because he makes the aria sound so easy, whereas with most modern tenors you would hear more effort in the voice.

@@albanvic @Victor Cowen Corelli was a verismo tenor with no sense of style for anything but verismo. Totally out of his depth in Bellini, never sang the role on stage, and couldn't have coped with the tessitura anyway. Pavarotti had little affinity for Bellini and the romantic period in general, sang all in all about 15 performances then dropped the role for good. Maybe Bellini's romantic musical line sung in style doesn't appeal to your verismo tastes, but this doesn't make it silly. Silly is to expect Arturo to sound like Andrea Chenier.

@@elpescadordesandalias1599 Don't you think you are exaggerating a little? Fleta was hardly the best tenor ever , not to mention you haven't heard all tenors since 1600. His technique can't have been very good ,otherwise he would have lasted longer than just 10 years. He was perhaps one of the best zarzuella tenors but not one of the best operatic tenors ,recorded many zarzuellas but comparatively few opera arias. He had a limited operatic repertory and never sang Turandot with the exception of the La scala performance so we must conclude the role didn't suit him. Gigli didn't sing the role at all

Lauri Volpi and Gigli are my two favorite tenors. They could both sing in a ringing manner as well as in a blended register mode that allowed them to swell and decrease their sound intensity very gradually and seamlessly. It's interesting that they shared the same teacher, Antonio Cotogni, who sang with Moreschi, the last castrato of the Sistine Chapel. This former might have incorporated into his teaching some of the old Baroque Maestros' (Provenzale, Porpora, Gizzi, Durante...) procedures.

Style, technique, aspect of a style or technique, call it what you want. If you listen to the singers who performed closer to the first part of the 20th century, they all sang with that faster vibrato. You have to go back way before Kraus my friend. Try listening to some of the early recordings of the 20th century. Some singers later adapted to the new style and slowed down their vibrato, but Lauri Volpi was obviously not at that point yet in 1933. It's a matter of aesthetics most of all.

Even today, many notice that there's a bit of a return to this when you listen to some of the younger singers. They have fairly fast vibrato rates...Larry Brownlee, Juan Diego Florez...even tenors with larger voices like Stephen Costello, Bryan Hymel, etc. There's also an emphasis in many studios on constant vibrancy. This is a factor...I would believe. Surely temperament plays a role in vibrato rate as much as technique can. I find it a rather interesting topic.
