This lava flow in Hawaii erupted from a cinder cone (seen in the background) and flowed several miles to the sea. The lava cooled as it hit the seawater, creating little cliffs where new lava dripped and flowed over. Much of the lava flowed along under water on the sea floor through newly-made lava tubes. These tubes occasionally , and suddenly, collapse, which causes huge dangerous steam explosions (seen at the end). This is the highest volume lava flow ever recorded, which happened near Hilo, and Hawaii actually got bigger as a result of this lava flow.
