Matthew McGonigal that would make sense but the amount of time he was being neglected while bleeding out in the movie should’ve killed him. Maggie had to drive back, get raped, and then drove 20 miles to get him to a hospital. And it was 1930. Idk maybe it didn’t play out like that in real life.

Radar211, what makes you say that Tom Hardy is versatile? I struggle to think of a role of his that isn't some sort of hard man, even his gay character in RocknRolla wasn't gay at all. When I think versatile I think Daniel Day-Lewis from my left foot to Lincoln where speech is changed and demeanor is completely different to do with his method process. For me Tom Hardy speaks the same in every movie, he mumbles and his facial expressions are singular and his characters have hardly any depth but a sort of silent strength that adds to his physical which he has obviously been cast for. That's my take on him, my humble opinion.

I've watched this movie three times now. One thing that few ever comment on is the countryside it was shot in. When I go down into the States this is my favourite place, the south. The Smoky Mountains have to be one of the most beautiful places on the face of the planet. There are some I know who rave about California, but for me, Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Kentucky, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, West Virginia.........that's where I want to be. It's quite possibly the best riding country there is. Lots of underused back roads of two lane blacktop winding through the trees, the mountains, and the fields. There's not a lot of money around and it shows, but the folks there are some of the best I have ever met. Quiet, hardworking descent people who, once they get to know you a little, will welcome you and take you into their world. They have a rich sense of humour and a certain mischief about them that you can see in the gleam of their eyes. You could do a lot worse.

I agree, although it's not a patch on Director's pervious two films Aussie classic The Proposition (one of the greatest films of 00's) or The Road. But Lawless is a gem, with a fantastic turn from Tom Hardy and especially Guy Pearce, I didn't love it when I first seen it as I'm not a big fan of Shia LeBeouf, he's no lead actor imo and he's miscast in this. Hardy isn't given as much to do but he still delivers a great performance and his chemistry with Jessica Chastian is great, she's very good in this too. But this is Guy Pearce's film all the way, he really does sinister better then anyone I've seen. Plus throw in Nick Cave's great and bleak screenplay, plus a great soundtrack by him and Warren Ellis and even though I don't think it's Hilcoat's best film I still think it deserves more love then it gets.

The first time i watched it i thought it was an ok movie.. but every time i have watched it since i ask myself how I missed so much.. the tension throughout the movie is fantastic. Pierce was fantastic so was Chastain.

I’m from the south and can usually somewhat tell when an actor who is trying to be southern is not by any means. But I really thought he was naturally born in the south. No idea he was British. Amazing!!

Can’t say the same for the “Chicago” gangster who instead of speaking with a Chicago accent uses a generic New York accent but hey haha

Goes to show you how fucked his accent was because this movie was set in central Appalachia, not the south. That's a bastardized Georgia accent and they're supposed to be in Virginia.
