Hi Atty. I think you made the right choice. You sacrificed everything for the future of your family. Welcome to Canada! I am not a member of the IBP but I could relate to you as far as the pain and challenges of moving to a new country from the Phil. I have been in Canada since 1989 and plan to retire this coming year. Mahirap talagang mag adjust dito sa Canada. However, for those of us who did mot give up, the future is bright. At the end of the day you will come to realize that coming to tjis big beautiful country is the best decision you have made in your life. For yourself and your family.Good luck.

Leaving my dream job as Municipal Engineer and Civil Engineer for 10 years in my humble hometown is never easy... then starting in a new country from scratch is a huge challenge ... but with determination , prayer and resilience ... I kept my pride away and work as cleaner , then care assistant , nurse assistant then went back to university and gained my First Class Honours in Nursing in 2014 ... still studying even at 50 for a post graduate studies is a continuous challenge . I hope and wish your decision with your family to move to Canada is successful. God bless.

Hi Emma. I'm also a lawyer in Philippines and I practiced for 5 years as corporate lawyer in an insurance company. I live here in Las Vegas. Thank you for sharing your story. In Nevada, I'm not qualified to file petition for equivalency to take bar exam because I need 10 years of practice. I'm short of 5 years. But that's ok. I got a great job in an insurance company here and worked for 5 years. I owned 2 houses in Las Vegas and saved up for retirement. Don't worry about not practicing law. There are job and business opportunities that are better than the law profession and that can pay equivalent or more than the law profession. That's just my opinion. Keep it up.

@@alexchiu6621 As I heard from friends, Judges in the Philippines are paid 200 to 300 thousand pesos per month kasama na diyan mga allowances and depende rin sa length of service at sa kung anong Court, RTC, MTC. Prosecutors/Fiscals starting at 200 libo per month. May Acceptance Fee, Retainer Fee, Appearance Fee at iba pa.

Hi Emma and Alvin, your story of settling in Canada is very inspiring . We have been living here in Vancouver for the past 29 years. Just like you, we left our nice jobs in the Philippibes to look for a better opportunities for our two kids. I worked in an American bank while my wife was a an ICU nurse in PGH. Our two kids were 16 and 6 years old then. We're proud to say that our son (Mark) is now a successful auto mechanic in Lexus while our daughter (Kristine) is a nurse in Richmond Hospital. One thing more, we came to Canada when I was already 45 years old and my wife was 41. It' s really very hard working your way up in a foreign country. We were able to succeed through prayers and sacrifices. We are already retired now and receiving a good pension from the government. So much now for my long story of struggle in Canada. Laban lang kabayan.

I feel the same, being abroad for 16 years already. Everyone has their own reasons & opinions though. But mine is - it’s just one big rat race out here in the west. Yes, all the factors that’s mentioned here are so attractive and really does make for a great decision for moving. But unfortunately, it’s not going to be that black and white. There are other hidden negative factors that would soon be at play, that really nobody talks about. I only wish people would have known that, if you already have a good job and are well established in the Philippines, then you are already well off and that is enough. There may be less traffic here, but everything is still at great distances that everyone in the family must learn to drive or drive their own car to be productive. (There are great public Transpo. - but still that takes time, as well). Children are better in the Philippines where they become very respectful, religious, we’ll behaved and very family oriented citizens. Peer pressure here in the west is very strong, even if you taught your kids well at home.. You may earn more here or have benefits - but it’s still mortgage here or insurance there, then taxes here or taxes there, etc. etc… With that said, I emphasize again that this is just my own opinion, from my own experiences. Truly, wish the best for your family!

SMH. I admire your confidence BUT you will soon see that living here in Canada is not a Golden brick road. CONS 1. Traffic is just as horrendous in Toronto so it depends where you live. 2. Philippines is not a 3rd world country. You've been brainwashed to think it is "3rd world is an old definition based out of WW2" Philippines is a developed country and growing to be more modernized. 4.Poverty does exist in Canada the reason why you don't see it because the media/government hides it well. The 1st nations (natives) most live in squalor and homelessness. 3.Violence is everywhere regardless where you live. 4. Prejudice/Racism does exist in Canada again they hide it very well. 5.Getting a mortage/house in Canada is getting to be just as hard. 7. As you are aware your education and experiences at your profession means nothing. It is unfair because the Philippines educational system is just as good if not better in some sectors. You where probaby better off in the US because some University degrees are recognized there. 8. You have to work and work and work some more here to get what you want. Anxiety, depression and host of other health problems can arise if you don't balance work and play. The change of season plays a big part. Especially, in the winter time. You have to learn to enjoy the winter activities. PROS 1. Healtcare is free because there is nobody in Canada(35 million plus). The country is able to sustain FREE healthcare for now. 2. True, primary education is free as well as high school. Help is given as well to students who wants to go to College or University. But it is not free you have to pay it back regardless. 3. The quality of life is good because you are exposed to many cultural diversity and you learn to " TOLERATE" one another. But most are reluctant to understand your culture. 4. You have to adapt, overcome and assimilate your self to climate and different cultures. 5. Overall the Government is ok. But don't be fooled they hide there corruption very well. It is not perfect as you perceived it to be. 6. There are social assistance to low income families but believe me surviving on that help DEPENDS on your dependants and ultimately you wouldn't want to live like that. 7. The population is much lower compared to the Philippines so you have this illusion that every problems here is less BUT not necessarily. 8. The government cares about the natural beauty of the land and preserves it by protecting it. Many activities can be done out doors because there are strict laws prohibiting you not to destroy it and you will be fined heavily if you dont follow the rules and regulations. Unlike the Philippines " Palakasan" which is wrong. Please do not delude yourself that life in Canada is much better then the Philippines. There are pros and cons in any country you live in. You work very hard in this country to get what you want. If you're lucky you might be at the right place at the right time and become a very successful business woman. Otherwise you still have to work hard even if you're a professional by trade. Good luck to you and your family and I hope you do find happiness and success living in this country.

@@alwinemma point well taken, with an exception for the 3rd world comment Philippines is not a 3rd world "maybe" a developing country but definitely not a 3rd world by definition. The disparity between the rich and poor is very apparent but that's because of many years of mismanagement of the Government policies, education, laws, rules and regulations and abusement of the majority of "RICH" people who want to keep the poor people uneducated. So that they can keep them uninformed which in turn they can be "used" and "abused" for there own benefit to get themselves RICHER. It wasn't always like that before the 70's, every Asian country looked up to the Philippines including South Korea and Singapore etc...Now the country is playing catch up which shouldn't have been had the Government actually cared for the "Masa" instead of just the well connected or mayaman (rich). I understand very well why you are here. Obviously, for the kids. The opportunities are limitless if they are brought up properly with a strong mental attitude with the foundation of good morals and values. You and your husband are not financially poor compared to the rest of "other" Filipinos that come here. As an international student you pay double the amount for tuition. So you are more privileged then others because you already had a good career in the Philippines. Most importantly, I think the "FREE" health care is what sold you the most. We all know too well if you get very sick in the Philippines the cost can be tremendous even with health Ins. It will diminished whatever savings you have unless you're filthy rich. Just like the United States. Correct me if I'm wrong. I wish you and your family many great endeavors also a happy and healthy long life.

@@ziggymarley4961 Your comments are detailed and and factual except for the free Healthcare. One study estimated the health care cost for a family of four in Canada to be $15,200 a year based on the taxes they pay. High taxes pays for that health care whether you use it or not. In the Philippines or if you reside in another country, one can get global health insurance when they retire plus avail of that discount for seniors from Phil Health. My friends retired in Thailand and global health coverage is only US$3,500 a year per person. That's very affordable for a retiree. The other thing I want to point out is the Canadian Healthcare system is actually buckling due to increased population. I went to ER in Toronto and Vancouver and it took 6-8 hours to get admitted. I saw in the news many hospitals today the wait is 21 hours while the children's hospitals are fully booked this winter season. Canada is attracting 500,000 immigrants a year and quite frankly the Healthcare system won't be able to handle it. Lastly, good luck finding a family doctor in Canada as there is a huge shortage of GPs as there's not enough doctors to replace the ones that are retiring. Many doctors in Canada are also opting to work in the US for better pay.
@ziggymarley4961
@@robocop581 point well taken. It's still "FREE" regardless, if you live in the US you might not wait long to be seen by a Dr. but the cost after the assessment/operation depending on your sickness/ emergency is still well over the amount we pay in taxes. I agree we pay higher taxes here in Ontario but that's the price you pay for living in this country. Had you read my comment in "health care", I said it works for now because the population in Canada is very low. As a result the Government is able to sustain this "free" health care "for now". Hypothetically, if there are over a 100 million people in Canada there's a possibility that "Free" might be a thing of the past.

Our kababayan here in Zamboanga, who spent many years in Canada, once shared a remarkable insight with us. "Canada is like a gold mine, great for working and earning, but not really a place to live." He went there solely to make money, living in a dingy basement and saving every penny. And save he did! He retired early and returned to our Province here in Philippines, with fortune in his pocket. Today, our kababayan lives like a king. Thanks to his frugality in Canada, he now owns not one, but two magnificent mansions and cars in our hometown plus the low-tax, low-cost-of-living and perfect weather here in Philippines. And as if that weren't enough, he's also invested in real estate rentals, with a profitable side business that brings him even more wealth. No more homesickness. Being around with close peeps gives him all the warm fuzzies and a sense of belonging that he couldn't find in Canada and anywhere else. But he still loves to travel back to Canada and other countries for tour purposes only.

Not conviced with your reasonings kung bakit mas ok dyan sa Canada. Philippines is neither worse or better in Canada. Just different. Political wise, Canada has also issues with their politics, just different issues. Also social issues like acceptance of woke ideologies, pati sa school tinuturo pagiging LGBTQ+ sa mga bata. Politicians there also forgot the difference between men and women. At least Philippines, majority still believes in traditional family and moral values. And health benefits? Might as well pay insurance in the Philippines, meron mga hospitals in any major cities at mas ok availability ng doctors.

Ung ibang nababalitaan ko may 2 to 3 jobs jan pra lang maka survive. Matalino po kayo maam, you can do WFH jobs kahit nasa Pinas ka lang po. If lawyering for you is just a means to achieve financial success and social status then you can get your satisfaction without longing for the field you chose to abandon. Hi Emma, you have made the right decision to come to Canada for your family future. I am Mechanical Engineer in the Philippines back then working in a top cement company there. We started from zero also when we landed in B.C., no job, no house, no car etc. I need to upgrade my profession but it will take about 2 years to complete it. I decided not to pursue it anymore because it will be hard for us to survive specially that my 3 kids are still young. Me and my wife worked hard to provide for the family and luckily I was able to land in a government job which offered high salary and benefits. And speaking of healthcare benefits, last August this year I had an angiogram and found that 4 arteries on my heart were 70-80% clogged, right away the doctors made a bypass surgery on me free of cost. Mahirap lang sa umpisa but later on through hard work and prayers malalampasan nyo lahat yan. Cheers.

Hi my name is Bien Garcia and I have been in Canada for 48 years. I had my degree in the Philippines and I came to Canada after martial law. I was planning to take my masters from WLU in Waterloo but I was told my degree was not acceptable so they advised me to start from the beginning. So I did. Since then I have never looked back and never had any regret. I am now retired and and happy I moved into this wonderful country. I live in Toronto and have meet a lot of people from the Philippines with their degree from doctors, lawyers, accountants and so on. You are not unique we have been there just think that you are here for the long term and for the good of your family especially for your children. As for me i have two grown kids who are very successful here in Toronto and I am very happy at the result of my decision to move here in Canada. So do not fret about anything now that you are here focus on the future for you and your family we did and the result is fantastic. I was gonna say good luck but I do not believe in luck, you were guided to be here grab it and be thankful. Ragards

Hi Atty Emma. Kami naman both doctors nandito sa Toronto. We decided to go back nalang sa Pinas. Here's our reason po. 1. Silect racism. You will realize this once nag aaral na ang anak mo. 2. We have better work life balance in Cebu compared dito. 3. 4. This may not apply to you. Yung profession namin, almost impossible kami maging doctor dito kasi pangit ang system nila. Or shall I say "racist" ang system nila towards doctors. I can expound more pa soon. Anyway, I am happy for you! God Bless!

Both doctors so why did you even try moving to Canada? If you are doing well in the Philippines, just stay put. But wait, health care system there is not as up to par as in CA. Would you get the same specialized care over there when your organs start acting up?

I wish you all the best. I too have experienced the financial crisis in the family because of illness. Mayaman kmi, bigla kami nag hirap. That was when I was single and earning good. But later on, I chose to remain in the Philippines lalo nung nagka anak ako, because in my experience na talagang bilog ang mundo. Naghirap, naka recover sa sariling bayan. Now looking back, that is one thing that I want my son to learn. Sikap palagi and things will turn our right, although not immediatelly. Patience and perseverence work wonders. There are no guarantees in life ika nga. Babagsak, babangon. Pero syempre iba iba tyo ng buhay so I wish your family all the best in Canada.

Otherwise kung under 7 libo US dollar lang breaking even lang kayo diyan.

We are not highly paid po, not that high to get us a house (yet, might take more years), nor give us peace of mind as we dont have enough emergency funds. 5 years experience as a lawyer is still considered a beginner po. If I will just think of myself, yes my salary will be enough. But since I am considering the future of my whole family, we have to try something and take risks. @@alwinemma Sabi nga ni Forest Gump life is like a box of chocolate daw na di mo alam hanggang di mo subukan and worth the try naman. But for the children and the future siguro mas maganda sa advance countries at mas marami opportunities.

Emma that was an HONEST evaluation of everything in your decision to uproot your family and move to Canada. It's inspiring and hope in the next few months you have updates to this episode alone. Kodus to you and your husband for making the leap of faith to your new country and may you both succeed. It's beautiful up there too. By the way I suddenly remembered as I was contemplating of moving up there from the US, I called some facilities to work in Vancouver and befriended a nurse in one of those conversations as she urged me to move and told me that she's also an immigrant. I said really when her accent is the same as a canadian or american. She finally told me she's white born in Washington USA. I was so curious as to why she left the US. Her reason free healthcare as in the US you have to pay for insurance and everything and in her masteral thesis she found out that insurance after awhile could unload or throw you out from coverage if its been years they've been paying and taking care of you which the insurance industry considers as a loss. I've heard that in the news several years ago and more today. She also told me that healthcare in Canada is free for all while in the US only helps the rich NOT the poor. It was a revelation that took me by surprise and I believe her as it was her masteral thesis she has to defend.

Hi! Kamusta and Welcome to Canada. Yes, I do agree that there's a green pasture here but we need to sacrifice and embrace the cold weather. I was sponsored by my parents and landed 1987. I am a Draftswoman in pinas as well here in Toronto. I did apply in Engineering agency and lucky I got my skills back but then the company moved to highway 7 I quit coz my family here in Scarborough. Then I found company which they do Electrical and I don't have experience in it but they trained me. So, don't get frustrated and Philippine education was American pattern and here in Canada was British patterned it's totally different. You have to understand it they have different Laws in Canada that you need to adopt and even the unpredictable canadian weather ☺️. If you're saying your husband is an Engineer then he could get a job in engineering company thru agency and as long as he knows CAD or anything about computer drafting design. I also know a lawyer in Brazil but she's working in hospital research, pinay nurse she's working at the hotel, architecture she works at auto factory. So, please don't get frustrated just be thankful what you have.🙏🙏🙏

Ang dental Meron ka lng pag me work ka, Ang medical or gamot libre pag may work Kasi NASA work benefits mo Yun but govt Di cover Yun. Rental or buying a house is Ang taas na din which is my own experience for 17 years sa Canada. Foods transportation too high na din lahat na nagtataasan but the salary still the same since last 10 years na. Mag eend up ka ng Puro work na lng kung gusto mo maabot Ang good life tlg.But in the other side Tama nmn tlg na safe and Canada compared sa pinas but in my own experience nagkasakit Ako because ng dahil sa work pero no one can help me coz even nung magpunta Ako pro bono lawyer they told me na Alam mo ba kung gaano kalaki Ang company na gusto mo I court Doon Ako na disappoint sa Canada that I thought pinas lng Ang may palakasan. But I'm hoping maging human rights lawyer ka Dito to help the regular employees who are being treated unfairly just because of the multibillion company, by the way I also live here in Calgary

It is not really free health, that's your tax and Albertan's tax. Canada has socialism style of government, so, anyone watching this, don't think it's free healthcare, no such thing as free, somebody or someone is paying for it. Been here for twenty years, a Licensed Civil Engineer from Philippines and now a Professional Engineer in Canada in several provinces. For sure it will take years to get licensed as an Engineer, LAwyer etc. but only the strong will survive. Good Luck.

If you are a teacher major in Kindergarten in the Philippines and planning to come here in Alberta, it will be your advantage. The government of Alberta is giving certifications ( level 1, 2 and 3 )to qualify if you want to work in Early Childhood Education. This has government wage top up that depends on your level.

When you settle in a western country especially in the U.S. or Canada, drop everything whoever you are, because you have to start from scratch. Everybody is equal no matter if you’re a doctor, engineer or lawyer. Nobody cares about your degree. Unlike in the Philippines, where you are high and mighty if you are a lawyer, or if you work in a corporate office, etc. They don’t count or care about your degrees in America. You have to go back to school.

Back to zero ka tlga pag dating mo dto sa Canada. U need Canadian experience. Hnd ka mkakapagtrbho dto n wla ka Canadian experience. Hahanapan k tlga nila ng work experience.
