At the convocation ceremony of the National Law University, Delhi, held on Saturday, September 13, Supreme Court Judge Justice BV Nagarathna addressed the graduating law students. In her speech, she emphasized that a lawyer should not simply act as a "hired gun" or "rubber stamp" for their client, underscoring the importance of balancing their duty to the client with their duty to the Court.
Justice Nagarathna urged the new graduates to ensure that their legal training elevated them beyond being "legal mechanics" or mere representatives of their clients' wishes. Quoting Chagla, C.J., from his autobiography Roses in December, she reminded them that a lawyer must act in good faith, avoid misleading the court, and disclose any information required by law. She also warned that while clients may attempt to present anything arguable, advancing inadmissible or misconceived evidence could damage the integrity of the justice system.
