The wool blanket is genius! I've only hammock camped once in winter for two nights when it got down to 15 deg.I had to do a lot of mental positive thoughts to keep from heading to the car. A wool blanket would have helped protect my down from condensation, plus added another layer of warmth.

I slept in my backyard after a night shift the other day, it was 16F when I went to bed. Warmed up quite a bit by 11am, but until then I slept beautifully with the Lynx 0F UQ and my Kodiak WM sleeping bag. The problem was that I was burning up by 11am because the temp climbed into the 40s. Would have been perfect for night sleeping though. I love this hammock.

Hi Rob, nice video. Thanks for posting. My winter camping set-up for the RR is something like yours. Underneath: 2QZQ UQ protector, Costco DIY (my DYI uses pennies wrapped with shock cord and mini-biners at the corners), AHE Ridge Creek XL (25d) and a military casualty blanket in the sleeve of the RR. On top: Woolly Mammoth Wool blanket as a base in the hammock, Sea to Summit Thermolite Reactor and the HG Econ Burrow (20d). I sometimes forego the Thermolite reactor and use a WB Spindrift sock. Sleepwear: Terramar Merino Woolskins. Headwear: Blackrock Down Beanie or Patagonia fleece balaclava. Handwear: Patagonia Better Sweater Fleece Gloves. I have been warm and comfortable down into the single digits.

Nice video Rob. For some reason I wasn’t subscribed. Nice layering system and nice touch with the wool blanket. I was out just a week ago with my ridge runner where it got down to 16°. I have to use pads in mine Because I get serious shoulder squeeze. I used my insulated large Nemo tensor and the large green Walmart closed cell foam pad. And I doubled up a 10° Econ top quilt and a 30° diamondback LOL. Was just barely enough by morning. Condensation was a big issue for sure up around my head. I think I might just end up using something small up there to cover up the quilts. Anyways, thanks for the video.

Layering is sometimes the way to go. Sometimes it’s a bitch. Haha. Try a frost bib for moisture. Perhaps that may work for ya. 16° is legit. Good work!

I use a minus 20 synthetic sleeping bag, but have used two lessor bags inside of each other before. layering does work. I bought the new Ridgerunner after watching your video about it.. I am very pleased with it. I got the double bottom and use a 30" wide air mattress partially inflated for insulation, (R4 rated). I may make a wool blanket sleeve to put the air mattress into first. That would give two layers of wool in addition to the R4. I know people make under quilts for the Ridgerunner, but I have not invested in one yet, and not sure that I want to. I want to try adapting the hammock for ground use, so non compressible insulation is better. I live in the Southwest, (not many trees) I have just been hanging in the yard so far. It does get below freezing here at night during the winter. Cold enough for water lines to freeze and brake.

The WBRR can be used for ground fairly well. An UQ is very nice when hanging. No fuss. Simple. Air pads work well too. I’ve used them in my set up.

@@robpelton Thanks for the reply. On grounding the WBRR, do you lift the corners with something to give you more interior room or just poles on the ends of the ridge line and stake to the ground? I have never seen a video about making it a bivy sack/ tent. Maybe it would get you some views making one.

Rob another great ridgerunner video. I also love my loco libre underquilt based on our previous discussion. Regarding the DIY Costco underquilt do you make that or buy it somewhere? Also was it made larger to not squish the 20 degree? Third is there any benefit to the order you layer 50 then 20 or vice versa?
@robpelton
3 жыл бұрын
I bought the Costco UQ. It’s made for a gathered end hammock. So, it adjusts loos enough for the layering system. I put in the outside, because it was loose enough and I wanted the 20° next to me.

Dutchware makes a vapor barrier for hammocks that weighs less than an ounce called the Breathalizer: dutchwaregear.com/product/breathalizer/ 2QZQ also makes a underquilt protector with a beefier shock cord system to hold an inflatable or foam pad in place on the outside of underquilt for bridge and gathered end hammocks: www.2qzqhammockhanger.com/product/under-quilt-protectors/

I’ve seen the breathalizer. There are definitely other ways, much lighter ways, of mitigating the moisture.
