Man, hearing about Layne's upbringing really does hit home. I understand what he must've felt like holding onto hope for his absent father as a kid, as I did the same. Recently as well, my father and I have been doing drugs together since I turned 18. I'm now 20 and disowned by him, I lost my father, home and myself during these times and I became so attached to Layne and his story during this era in my life. Layne and AIC help me cope with the loneliness even though I am still using. I know that pain, the suffering.

As someone who got high with their parents, i can speak on this. Addicts don't have parents and addicts don't have kids. Addicts have addicts. I don't look at drugs as a disease because i don't like that all the blame gets absolved from the user. Everyone is accountable to some degree. Its a shame, Layne and his dad, Mike Starr and his.
@wilhathaway1987
Жыл бұрын
I disagree on drugs being the disease. Drugs are not the disease, the disease is with the person who finds that particular substance that makes them comfortable in their own skin. The disease is the chemical imbalance when once they do the said substance it makes feel like normal. I have spent over half my life battling this sh*t. Some people can do drugs one or a handful of times and go yeah not for me or that was fun and never want to do it again. I have done that with certain substances and was like oh that’s fun and do it a handful of time and once it’s gone I don’t care to do it again. But then I found one substance that made me feel comfortable in my own skin, took away all my problems, and made not not feel. I loved it, well that group of drugs literally destroyed my life and 5 stints in rehab still hasn’t fixed it. I can go on periods of being clean and they I fall. It’s been a never ending battle. And as much as I should stay away and all that it’s taken from me, it’s the only thing that makes me feel normal. It’s a sad existence and I would wish it on my worst enemy.

At the nucleus of the whole drug addiction that ultimately led to Layne's demise, you can see where it stems from. Layne was bound to be an addict regardless of whether his father stayed in his life just from a genetic standpoint; but the initial wound that his father created never healed. It may have scabbed over temporarily when he found short-lived sobriety, but the damage was done. Who's to say if Phil never came back into his life if he'd still be with us? Obviously he did more harm than good. I don't know how to feel about him getting Layne's awards.

That is utter nonsense. No one is destined to be an addict just because one of their parents is an addict. That’s such an awful self-fulfilling prophecy to put out into the world. You have no idea how many young teens are reading this comment who may have an addicted parent. That’s a horrible and untrue message to send to them. To anyone who grew up in a home with an addicted parent, DO NOT LISTEN TO OP. You will not end up like your parent unless YOU make that choice, and you DONT have to make that choice. There are so many people who have sworn off all drugs and alcohol because of what they saw growing up, and they are clean to this day. Look up to those people, not the people who made the wrong choices. Being genetically predisposed to addiction is not a sentence to a life of addiction. It is only that, a predisposition. YOU ultimately have the choice to never use a substance, and addiction cannot touch you if you don’t allow it to. Please remember that.
