🎤 What do James Brown and our Bird of the Week have in common??
Named after the blue gemstone lapis lazuli, male Lazuli Buntings glow as brightly as their eponymous jewel. But this bright bunting is also a top singer, & each male makes his song unique through a process also used in human composing: sampling! 💽
🐣Lazuli Buntings aren’t born knowing how to sing. Like most songbirds, they learn their species’ song by mimicking adults. But a male Lazuli Bunting (only the males sing) takes the process a step further by “borrowing” bits of songs from neighbors and then recombining the notes, order, and phrasing to create new songs! He’ll eventually settle on one song type; this “crystallized” song is then his signature tune for life. 🎼
🌟Complex song “sampling” skills aren’t the only thing that makes Lazuli Buntings a hit! Learn more about these musical marvels at bit.ly/3RpJDx9.
Bonus fact: James Brown, the most sampled artist of all time, has been sampled in over 3,000 songs! 👑
