In this dual interview, we talk to the co-founders of Lazzaro Medical, a StartUp Health company on a mission to improve patient care for those suffering from tracheobronchomalacia (TBM) by advancing the development of their robotically-assisted Minimally Invasive Tracheal Repair (MITR™) procedure, using their patented LM Scaffold System™.
First up is Richard Lazzaro, MD, a thoracic surgeon, who shares his journey into entrepreneurship and the evolution of minimally invasive surgery. He discusses the challenges of diagnosing and treating TBM and the innovative solutions he has developed. With Lazzaro Medical, he aims to revolutionize TBM treatment through minimally-invasive surgery and a unique scaffold system.
Next we chat with Rob Israel, who highlights the company's progress towards FDA approval and commercialization, emphasizing the potential impact on millions of patients suffering from TBM. And just this week, the company announced their $2.4M Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Direct to Phase II grant from the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) of the National Institutes of Health (NIH). This grant supports ongoing research and development efforts, verification and validation, preclinical work, and regulatory activities.
