Overview
A nutraceutical is a substance that may be considered a food or part of a food which provides medical or health benefits, encompassing prevention and treatment of disease. Products as diverse as isolated nutrients, dietary supplements, and diets to genetically engineered “designer” foods, herbal products, and processed foods (cereals, soups, beverages) may be included under the umbrella of nutraceuticals.
Metabolomics South Africa (MSA) in partnership with the African Centre for Gene Technologies (ACGT), Diplomics and the University of Venda, have organized and prepared a virtual training session on LC-MS. The technique is a powerful tool for the detection of residual chemical compounds, identification and quantification of small organic molecules, and confirmation and quantitation of contaminants and adulterants in pharmaceutical and food samples. The training session specifically focus on sample preparation, extraction, and the data analysis in the identification of nutraceuticals from plants using LC- MS.
Structure
The session will be conducted as a presentation followed by an extensive Q&A session and discussions on LC-MS and other related issues.
The Facilitator
The session will be facilitated by Dr Edwin Ntakadzeni Madala from the University of Venda. Dr Madala holds a BSc in Biochemistry and Biological Sciences from the University of Venda. He attained his BSc (Hon), MSc and PhD in Biochemistry from the University of Johannesburg. He worked as lecturer and later as a senior lecturer at the University of Johannesburg where he taught and conducted research in the field of Analytical Biochemistry. He has since joined the University of Venda where he continues do research in the field of phytochemistry, with special emphasising on naturally occurring isomers and artificially induced geometrical isomers through non-enzymatic nor chemical means. At the University of Venda, mass spectrometry instrument to study nutraceutical metabolites from green leafy vegetables. Edwin has supervised and co-supervised over 20 MSc/PhD students in Biochemistry, Chemistry and Food Sciences. Throughout his career he has published over 70 peer review articles and book chapters in reputable publishing houses.
Audience
This session is intended to introduce LC-MS to those with limited experience, some exposure. The session will also be a forum to address any issues that experienced users may also have. This session will also serve to answer questions following the first session held on the 10th JUNE 2021.
