I'm not hating (although I disagree that I can't judge a public performance until I've performed myself); Michele is very talented with a lovely voice. My only issue is that by using the same arrangement as Striesand did in "Funny Girl" and patterning her delivery on that version so closely, I can't really experience Michele's performance as hers alone. I'm too aware of when she sounds the same as Streisand, when she's trying to but but doesn't quite make it, etc. Someone less familiar with the original might not have that problem.

@JennaaMallonnn

I get Barbra has a better technique and a vibrato that's basically impossible to match, but what all these vocalists/singers shrieking "technique! technique!" need to realize is that the vast majority of people (who aren't singers) don't notice that shit and just go by how the voice sounds. And Lea Michele's voice is more pleasing to my ears than Barbra's. It's very angelic and sounds so beautiful. You can argue vocal technique all you want, I get Barbra wins hands down when you get into the technicalities of it, but no matter how good your technique is, every voice produces a specific sound, and I think the sound of Lea Michele's voice is just prettier sounding than Barbra's. Sacrilegious as it sounds, that's what makes Lea Michele a better singer to me, because when I have my earbuds in I'm not analyzing vocal technique, I'm listening to the sounds of the voice and Lea's just always sounds so damn good. Not trying to diss Barbra at all. She's clearly an amazing singer but I'm just trying to explain to people the best I can why certain people prefer Lea's voice over Barbra's.
@JennaaMallonnn
9 жыл бұрын
***** Fair enough! I was just trying to explain why certain people prefer Lea's voice over Barbra's - not all. To me, Lea's a better singer because she sounds better but obviously I'm not everyone and there are people who prefer the opposite. I'm not a singer, but if I'm being honest I never got the obsession with vibrato in every note. I get it might be harder to do, and that's what makes it impressive, but it actually doesn't necessarily sound better to me than a belt without it, if that belt is hit and sustained. Actually, when vibrato is over-used, which I think Barbra sometimes does by injecting it into every single note, to me it sort of sounds like she's using a jackhammer. But just like you said it's subjective. I'm certain Barbra will go down as the better vocalist. But outside of history books there will be plenty of people choosing to listen to Lea rather than Barbra, that is the only point I am making. Clearly both these women are very talented, and I would much rather hear Barbra or Lea than what I usually hear on the radio.
@stacyward9768

You are certainly entitled to like whoever you enjoy. However I think you will find that the world disagrees with you. Barbra is the 7th best selling female recording artist in history With 52 gold and 31 platinum albums, she has sold over 150 MILLION albums. The only artist that has more gold and platinum albums than her is Elvis. Hopefully as Michele grows into her career she can get to a point where she feels safe enough to sing things the way she wants to and doesn't feel the need to copy the way a previous artist sang it.
@mafe4101
2 жыл бұрын
To be fair, if I'm not mistaken, Lea was on Broadway since she was just a kid, so her technique is also impressive... I think we forget it 'cause her originals r more pop, but you can still find some videos of her on Broadway productions if you look it up (or even anything that is more theatrical than her pop songs... and I do like her pop songs, I just think she stands more singing theater music)... anyway, I don't think we need to compare her and Barbra... obviously Barbra has more experience, but Lea can just as much perform the vibratos I think, she probably just don't wanna do it or maybe think it's not worth it ('cause singing is almost exercising sometimes lol)... and thanks to her technique, we can enjoy her beautiful voice without "suffering" through normal mistakes

People saying her voice is irritating are delusional. She is one of the most incredible singers of this generation, not like these auto tuned idiots singing about a load of shit and making money for crap! People also saying her milking the death of her boyfriend and their relationship was fake is the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard! You can clearly see from the way they spoke about each other in interviews ect and when you seen pictures of them together and her public reaction when she accepted an award of how much she loved him! I would like to see you try and sing a song like this even remotely well and not be slightly nervous when singing in front of your idol! I love the way she has dealt with this, I don't think many people could say they thought their boyfriend was the greatest man ect after how he died from such a preventable way. She is so brave to stand up like that in front of everyone, I couldn't talk about it to people I have never even met! She doesn't even mention the fact of how he died but how he lived which is how he should be remembered for the decent lovely person that he seemed to be and not for a mistake he made. I don't think he wanted to die!

MissySampson1 the only thing you're good is talking about nonsense. Lea Michele milking this? she make ONE song about him (if you say so) which is very emotional. It wasn't suicide, it was an addiction that was hard on him. If you hate her so much and think she sucks then why don't you take her place? become a very well known soprano that can hold her notes for a long time. Instead of you judging her for every single thing she does perhaps check your life. you can't say someone sucks when you aren't better than her. some of the artists today can't even compete with her vocally. if you hat Lea then leave. the producers didn't make them date. Lea providing drugs? don't assume anything because you're making an ass of your self. you have no evidence against her so your accusations are false so before you say something stupid know what you are talking about. You're the one that is looking for all drama and the attention so in reality you're the one milking this. Just because your were deprived from attention doesn't mean you have to make negative and false statements against Lea.

The fact that he was sleeping with men (or so you say even though you didn't know him) doesn't mean that he wasn't dating lea! Could have been interested in both. And how can you call him a worthless pile of shit or a scumbag!!!!!!! You didn't even know the guy. I think you get confused when you are writing tour comments and start to think of yourself! People who knew him, people who weren't famous who knew him even before he found fame have said that he was a really nice person and what you don't know is that his mother said that he was going to be supporting a charity in Vancouver to help people overcome drug addictions! I don't care what they say about her. Lea Michelle delivers everytime. She gives us just enough of the Barbra delivery for it to satisfy but it is fully her to the end. Go girl.!

a year too late but though I sooooo wish she’d performed this one when I saw her on FG, I also can’t imagine someone pulling this off nightly. The vocal strain would be too much, considering the show is already challenging as is. Nevertheless she’s mindblowingly talented 🤯

This is what the young people who watched Glee didn't understand about Lea Michele. She was pure Broadway. She was not a contemporary singer like the other characters, singing the covers of the contemporary hits of 2009-2015. She was a Broadway singer and her character was a reflection of that.
@hiphipjorge5755
2 жыл бұрын
She and several other cast members were straight from Broadway, and Amber Riley went on to West End. There was a marked difference between those performers and the others who were more tv actors who just happened to be able to sing

***** No Lea Michele is technically better. Barbra was a great singer, but her tone was very breathy for the most part. Noted that during her career, that was a favoured type of sound, it still isn't always technically right for the song.. Barbra was fabulous, I have no argument with that. But if we are speaking of technic, I would have to argue that Lea Michele wins there.

Um, WHY? She is a grown woman who can decide on her own what she wants to do. If you ever get a tribute then you can decide how to respond. I don't know that much about Barbra but I believe she is a very reserved person. She has lived in privacy, out of the public light for quite a long time. You have no idea if she does that for anyone.

First of all, stunning. Second of all, Lea looked like she was gonna throw up, pass out, or break down in tears at any moment, especially when she walked up to the mic and when she left the stage. She looked incredibly nervous, and considering the nerves when performing in front of the person you have idolized for most of your life, she did a spectacular job. Is she as phenomenal as Barbra? no. Is anyone? no. Should people be comparing the two based on talent? No because everyone's personal preference is different and they come from two different but extremely similar worlds. They have very similar back stories, but they have different sounds. Barbra is way more experienced because of the time she started singing and because of her experiences. I'm sorry this was an essay, but it needed to be said.

I have my ticket for October. I believe this song unfortunately is not in the play, that it was added to the movie but I'm still excited. She sang DROMP when I saw the Glee tour and was great. The producers must be over the moon. They get bad reviews with Beanie, course correct and give the people (or at least SOME people) what they want and hire Lea AND anybody who hates Lea can go see the other woman Julie Benko. They must have happy danced all over the theatre. I'm excited.

+jackytwilightfan but that's the thing, why can't you compare certain pop singers? As Marco said, there are other pop singers who would have been perfectly capable of singing this song well and some who shouldn't even be near this stage. We should hold ALL pop singers to a higher vocal standard, especially since they're the ones who get blasted on what we hear around us 24/7.

My heart goes out to her - she looks utterly terrified. To her credit it's a really good performance, but you can hear her shaking and her vibrato stopping and starting (which is just a breath control/support issue because she's anxious). Obviously she's done better performances (and you can tell she knows it) but hell, she just sang for Barbara and did a pretty good job!!
