1:26 The 'free' part is very difficult. Many singers do 2 things to at least make it sound nice: First, they slowly proceed to singing the letter 'e' instead of 'i', or they use head note. Seeing Lea's performance was astounding, because she didn't need to switch sounds or anything. Bravo.

In the Philippines, its not acceptable to sing the national anthem other than how it is supposed to be sung. You could get fined if you are a popular singer and had sung the anthem in a wrong manner. That is what miss Salonga did too in the Star Spangled Banner, utmost respect to the national hymn needs to be observed, and not the singer's own version of the song.

Filipinos are trained to sing the national anthem as solemnly as possible. We have to respect the anthem. So we can't make our own rendition. But that's here in the Philippines. Inspiring and stirring! I don’t know why many singers try to put their own spin on the national anthem. It’s our national anthem, people. It’s not an adult contemporary tune. It’s not a pop hit. It’s not a jazz number. It’s not a rock sing. It doesn’t need to be altered, but sung as it was written. All event organizers have to consider is getting a singer with a glorious set of pipes who can sing with conviction.
