Female Leafcutter bees make a nest in an available hollow. She cuts a circular piece out of leaves like roses, Native Ginger (Alpinia caerulea) or Native Sarsaparilla (Hardenbergia violacea). The leaf sections are rolled and carried between her legs to the nest hollow where she creates a cigar shaped nest. The nest is packed with pollen and nectar before an egg is laid. This bee made her nest in the back of our cat's scratching post.
