Just did some of this at the local lot, really helped me get a feel for high lean angles and transitions. Practiced until I could feel my foot scrape every time. Though i need to practice more going the other way. I was doing it in first gear as well on my cb300r

Hi Kristian. I'm new to motorcycle riding and want to learn Motogymkhana as well. Can you tell me what controls you use during your turns to allow it to stay at such low angles? Is it just throttle control or do you mix it up with back brake and/or clutch?

I don't think he uses clutch. Only rear brake and throttle.

How much of back brake do you use? Do you hold it during the circle of just push it to lean on the beginning? :)

What is the Moto Gymkhana secret To turn?! Countersteering or lower body forward / backward on the seat ? I see many videos moto gymkhana japanese.

I think the g force is higher at higher speeds, giving more traction to the tires.

Moto gymkhana was first run in Japan I believe. A Japanese instructor would bark at you for leaning INTO the turns. Leaning into the turns keeps the bike more upright ( less lean angle), while the fastest way around a circle is more lean angle and counter weighting. Also the front brake is used to compress the forks to steepen the fork angle and effectively shortening the trail, which makes the bike turn quicker. Watch some Japanese top riders and see for yourself. They are amazing!! Don't believe me about the lean angle making a difference? Take a bicycle and lock the forks at any angle, 20-30 degrees for instance. Now take the bike and push it around a complete circle with the bike standing straight up. Measure the circle. Now lean the bike over at 30 or so degrees and push it around the circle. Measure the circle. Second one will be smaller in diameter. I wish this was around in the 70's when I was a lot more limber. Looks like a lot of fun. Be safe and enjoy the ride.

I was thinking the other day about how I could work on overcoming my fear of leaning and then I found this! Great exercise! Are you in 2nd gear for this? Any general advice?

Hi Alexis, I was running first gear, but since you have constant speed 1th of second would be ok I guess. Some tips: 1) relax your upper body as much as you can, very loose grip on the handlebars (except during the transition), 2) lean your body into the corner, 3) get a feel what breaking front and rear does, 4) look as far into the corner as you can, 5) Have fun!

I'm curious, why in gymkhana you dont lean in to touch the tarmac with knee? If think it is safer, because you feel better the limits and the motorcycle is less leaned, so more tire at ground. Maybe too much left-right transition so you are slower by doing this?

Hi Mattia, thanks for your reply. There are a few reasons why we don't us our knee as a reference, for example: 1) you need more room to place your knee, the cone layout is very tight, so the shorter the distance, the faster you are, 2) the cones are so close that you usually don't have time to shift your lower body, and 3) it will cause imbalance in the bike, due to the short time between the cones. Cheers, Kris

Fz9NYC It's 2x 6 meter cirkels, and the center of the cirkels are 9 meters apart from each other. I also tried to set up 3 cirkels, but there was a real bad spot in the tarmac, so I didn't use it. I use it to practice lean angle, relaxing my upper body, flipping the bike at the crossing and looking into the corner.

so If i did this on my cbr600 am i more likely to drop it orrr. I've only had my bike for about 10months I am worried I'll lowside at these speeds do you use special tires or can just about any bike get this low as long as your not choppy or off balance? I just dont want to slide out

train for it hardlean angles up to 45 degrees are reltively safe from a speed from 25-30 kp/h you can do this with almost every sport tire, just be sure it is properly warmed up. Start with like 30 dregrees (there is a app for it to mesure the angle from pirelli) and get lower and lower. Practice on a closed parking lot or some place. And remember to hold the throttle relatively steady. Before starting watch some howto body position videos that might also help. AND KEEP YOUR FINGER AND FOOT AWAY FROM THE BRAKES I did so with my 600cc naked bike and my top lean angle is 49 degrees now :)
