I love your lack of an accent, you speak Cantonese better than I do and I was born in Hong Kong

Your tones are wrong in some words "Mahn" is high rising. You're pronouncing it like the cantonese word for "problem" (Mahn Tai). Wohng is also high rising.

This particular video was SO helpful as I work in healthcare and this topic comes up all the time. So, Marguerite, please keep doing these videos! Also, if you could delve a little deeper into your most recent source, "Everyday Cantonese," that would be great! This is the 2nd book you've featured that I actually managed to find online (tapes included). I can't wait to get them & follow your expertise instruction on KZitem! Keep up the GREAT work! Cindy

Hi Cindy! Thank you so much and I'm sorry it's taken me awhile to reply. Have you gotten the "Everyday" book and tapes yet? I think it's such a fantastic book ... I've been trying to find it here in Hong Kong, but it seems all the books I've recommended aren't being produced any more which is such a shame. I'm trying now to see what I can do (if anything) to get this one and others re-printed. Thanks so much for commenting and liking the video -- I'm so glad I can help!

This is a great video. I am having trouble pronouncing the “ kueih” word like you. Are there different ways of pronunciating it? I grew up hearing both Cantonese and Toisan and I think I get them both mixed up.

Hi Sanny! I'm wondering if maybe sometimes I pronounce it with an extra throaty sound, which really isn't necessary ... but it IS a really closed-throat kind of sound that comes from the back of the throat ... perhaps just try tightening the back of the throat when you say it and see if that helps? As if you're almost trying to stop yourself from saying it ... but not all the way. :) How do you say it in Toisan? Are the two really similar?

The way I learned to pronounce it is similar to you but we don’t use the low tone, it’s more a middle or mid rising tone. I wonder if different regions have different accents? My parents told us we speak Toisan but when I listen to your videos, I recognize many of the words and phrases. Since I’m not very fluent, I really don’t know if we learned Toisan or Cantonese words. I’m so happy to see your videos because I feel I can re-learn Chinese!

I started watching your videos to learn Cantonese on my own about two weeks ago. Starting with numbers, I've been taking one video at a time about every three days. So far, it's been fun and engaging! Thank you for these videos.

What does the 得 mean? 食得 ? I know 食 is eat, but what does 得 do?

Bruce Wayne 得 on its own means can, to gain, to allow , to permit. So when following a verb like 食 it becomes can eat.
