Great video! I've actually had the opposite experience with Vigoro, but from my understanding, Home Depot uses local vendors. So the experience will differ based on location. I've used Vigoro in the NJ area for two seasons and my garden did well. The soil I've gotten wasn't clay like. Even still, I am trying new soil this year because, yes I do get random items in the soil here and there. So far, I like Fox Farm but it is a slight price jump from Vigoro.

That’s good to know! I like Fox farm too and purple cow. Of course the good ones are most expensive 😆

In a previous video I commented about how I successfully overwintered my bulbs outside in zone 4b/5a for the first time. I'm in quebec and its pretty much wet all year round so I quickly moved them to somewhere more covered: under my neighbors cement stairs and it was the best area. I think it might be a little harder to overwinter things on a deck since it's not benefiting from thermal exchange with the earth? I had a wall of bagged cedar mulch lining the outer pots to increase their thermal mass.

I also have the chicago hardy fig! I love it, mine is much shorter and bushier though. I leave it outside all winter in its container, I sometimes cover it with a frost bag cover when temps drop below 20-25 F just to give it extra protection and also cause its the only plant my husband cares about haha. Also the struggle of getting the right soil is so frustrating! I bought two bags of Fox Farm Ocean Forest potting soil... one bag the soil was perfect, the other bag the soil was absolutely terrible... different color, weird things growing in it, white mold. I was in such denial about it cause i paid so much money for it, and so I still used it. Probably should have complained but its too late, all the plants that grew in it suffered 😭

That’s good to know about the fig! I was assuming I’d need to bring it into the garage but leaving it out with protection would be so much easier. What zone are you in?
@LindaLolaa

@@ChicagoGardener I am in zone 7b in NYC, so i am a bit more mild than chicago. If you have the option to bring it in the garage, then that probably would be more advisable, but I can't do that so the frost bag has worked for me so far. I've even had to remove the frost bag by end of february from fear of actually overheating it cause our winter was so freakish.

Nice garden update. I'm really curious if that fig is coping with your winter in Chicago. Greetings from Berln. I had my fig tree inside for the winter. In that room it goes to 28 F but it's not as freezing as outside.

My plan (assuming I can carry it 🤣) is to keep it in the garage over winter but we’ll see how that goes

I’d like info on watering, such as auto timed irrigation or manual . Say you need to go away for a week, what’s your watering routine?

I used timed irrigation! I have a video from last year showing the setup: kzitem.info/news/bejne/qWuLn3t6kaCEa20si=x2HLCKDB3CJgHbx6

Thanks for all the suggestions. I have such a hard time thinning seedlings. As far as soil, I’m in Northern Ca, but have found the best deal on potting soil (I like Fox Farm brands) at the hydroponic store. I pay 11.99 for a bag there that’s $24.99 at Ace. My biggest mistake, not regularly checking to make sure I don’t have an issue with my drip.

The brand is holland copper! There are a few different resellers and the prices vary so I always google and see what is the cheapest at the time!
Amazing tips! I agree with every one of them, especially regarding the potting soil. There is truly so much to experience and to learn with container gardening. It’s so gratifying to look back and see how we approach things differently and evolve with every gardening season😊. I also like the look of all neutral containers & letting the plants look vibrant in contrast. One tip that I’ve learned to minimize the amount of potting soil I have to buy and use is pre fill the bottom of my larger or deeper pots with plastic nursery pots or pieces of styrofoam. I’ll only do this if I’m planting annuals as many of them don’t require a deep soil depth. But this way, my containers are less heavy, can easily drain when watered, and aeration’s improved🙌🏻

Thanks for sharing! This was so very helpful. I’m looking into buying two raised beds for vegetable (salsa) gardening. My question is about the soil used for them.. Did you use potting soil or gardening soil for them? And only potting for your containers (I’m noting that either way I may need to be amended when/if needed). First time gardening and haven’t yet sowed any seeds either. Most likely will buy established plants this season. Have a beautiful day!

Of your raised beds have a bottom like mine, I’d use potting soil. If your raised beds are open on the bottom to the ground, you can use garden soil!
