When I first got my bully she was only a couple of months old.... We would go on long walks and when we get back I would stick her in her crate and she would pass out. Within a couple of days she was going in there herself when she is tired and when I wanted her to. I’m glad I took a week of work to get her adjusted to her new home.

Great series. A word of caution about the raw marrow bones. Before filling them - take your finger and run it all inside the hollow part. Check to see if there are any sharp protrusions that would be hard on the dog's tongue. If it scratches your finger - imagine what it does to their tongues. We usually take a Dremel and grind it smooth before re-using.

Hello just wanted to know that I enjoy your videos and appreciate you being down to earth and being honest with people about training their dogs. I love my dogs, but I don’t like any dog jumping up on me or pulling me along while on walks. I have two strong huskies and they walk good on the leash. However, they will test me every now and then. I use your technique; even if I have to do it 10 times or more, they understand and get the message. I also don’t let them meet every dog that they see on walks. I pay very close attention to other dog’s body language. So many people come up to me to say that my dogs are so well behaved and can’t believe that I can walk two huskies at the same time and not being dragged down the street. I tell them lots of training and patience and correcting your dog when he/she does something that is inappropriate.

Thanks for the video. What should I do if my dog always chooses jumping on the sofa and sleeping on me, rather than using her crate voluntarily? Should I continually pick her up when she falls asleep on me and lock her in the crate with a good toy? She's generally fine when she's in the crate and definitely isn't scared of it. If she does go in there, she'll sit down for 30 seconds then decide she wants to sleep on me instead.

Great instructive video. For my puppy people with tiny puppies (mine are toy and mini pups so they go home very small around 5 pounds or less) I recommend for them an exercise pen with a plastic crate (more like a den) with the door off so they can go in and out. Then they can use pee pads and eat and drink at they need. They can also entertain themselves. As they grow and age they can graduate to a large crate or no crate at all.

Hi Joel, how do you address whining in the crate? I know it's a state of mind in the dog, but should I try address it in the same way as you address barking, by tapping the crate for example? Or do I simply ignore and wait for a sufficient time gap? Thank you for your guidance! You've been a great help!
@pamelakrumvieda3153
2 жыл бұрын
How's it going since you wrote this? I would wait it out. I would completely ignore. Only when quiet would I make eye contact, praise, and/or treat. I've seen Joel bang a door to stop a dog barking/whining from the other side but I'm not sure I'd do that when using a crate since you want to associate the crate with calmness and rest. A long walk before working on crate training should be helpful. If the dog's brain is zoned out and not even focused on getting your attention, try a loud noise like a whistle or air horn loud enough to stop the brain.

I’m fostering a 3 year old rescue dog and she does not like getting in the crate on her own accord. I don’t want to force her because I think she had a bad experience with crates and I want the crate to be a positive experience. I tried to lure her with treats and that worked once. She is not a huge chewer but I will try different chew items. Do you have any advice to help her with her fear (I think it might be fear) of getting in the crate. Thank you so much for your videos they have really helped with my foster dog. She is already learning “come/touch”, “sit” and working on “stay”. Could definitely use guidance as I need as much training as the puppy…this video is nice and some things I have tried. No matter the time I go to bed she will wake up and whine around 5am…I will take her outside…bring her back in but she starts whining again maybe 30 min later. Can you demonstrate how you would teach a puppy how to “come” and your recall process?
@jennaparish1563
2 жыл бұрын
Be the most exciting thing in the room. Pat your legs, make your voice a higher pitch, have treats as a reward, etc. Recall them randomly until you can fade out the treats and be more calm with the recall. The main thing is just to be as rewarding as possible when the dog comes to you. Pets, treats, tug, whatever their favorite thing is. It might help to start on a leash and give them a little pull towards you to get them going but puppies learn pretty fast and you shouldn’t have to have the leash for long. I hope this helps a little bit :)
