What would you do if you are installing a new window into a preexisting space on an older home with material such as brick on the exterior of the house? How do you create that airtight and watertight surface? Do you remove the material to expose the new opening to be able to apply that air and watertight compounds? I have so many questions and as a first time homeowner when I take on projects in my home I want to do them right. These videos have been great thank you for the knowledge.

That is so wrong I have been framing for 35 yrs I can put all 20 windows in a house like that in 1hr one cut across the top to slip the window under the Tyveck and then cuts on 45° in from each corner about 8 inches Wrap those sides and bottom jn the House staple them in then put the window in under the top cut nail it off and tape the bottom first the sides are taped next then the top Bang done fuck the roller just use your hand on the Tyveck and tape that shit sticks to Tyveck like contact cement the top flashing goes over the window trim during the siding install

So you don’t use any shims for the sides or top? Only if it’s skewed? Or never?

some folks do frame the sill with a slight angle out to allow water to drain - it is not a bad idea depending on your climate.

better not to fill the air gaps with foam, which impedes water drainage/evaporation. any insulation from the foam is negligible, given the tiny space.
@ConstructionEd

It is more about minimizing the air infiltration vs the thermal insulation

This is great! One suggestion I have is a video explaining what to do when you screw up--you mention things like checking for square on the rough opening before the window in, but I would have no idea what to do if it came out wrong.
@ConstructionEd
2 жыл бұрын
That is the really hard part if the RO is too far out of square that the window will not fit - often the solution it is fix the framing. I have seen some folks shave some of the framing - but that is problematic as you have to have a gap all around the window to make sure you have room for expansion and contraction of different materials.
@connorpenrod397
2 жыл бұрын
@@ConstructionEd So, pretty much you have to rip out the sheathing or even the framing and just try again?
@ConstructionEd
2 жыл бұрын
It all depends on how far out of square your RO is. Will your window actually fit in the hole?

You do not need to wait between steps - but if the caulking is wet wipe off any extra so the flashing tape sticks.
