Sarah, I'd try it with some fabric you already have to save on costs. I did mine with cotton. The kids will have fun trying without worrying about the fabric used. If you have a stretch sateen, that might be nice, but anything with some stretch would probably work😁

It’s funny how an old memory can be triggered by a spinning cloth. My father was a science teacher who taught us lots of physics on our farm. Centrifugal force, inertia, etc. In order to spin that thing, I imagine that the fabric must have a little bit of flexibility and softness that might be achieved by layering with cotton fabric like a lightweight quilt (not with batting) rather than using a fusible product. Also, it may be important to have a bit of weight around the edges of the stars by a more substantial application of binding. Examples I saw show a binding applied over the top edges of the squares and binding underneath as well. This is physics🤣. And there is a preliminary move to start the cloth into a spinning motion, which is crucial for success, and then is followed by the move you demonstrated. It can be compared to the pizza guy throwing the pizza dough into the air first. I might as well add that inertia is a law that says an object at rest wants to stay at rest, and an object in motion wants to stay in motion. That is why it takes a force to make a stationary object move, and less force to keep it moving. Centrifugal force pulls a spinning object outward and it wants to keep going straight but it can’t for whatever reason, so it keeps spinning . If you spin a string around it won’t spin, but if you tie a weight to the end of the string it will spin and keep spinning if it can. Then, there is gravity!......These are just some of the lessons I learned when I was 4 years old walking with my dad on a beautiful farm.

Thanks for this video! One aspect i think you should have mentioned is the type of fabric used ought to be kind of particular. The star needs to be heavy enough to get a good spin, yet the surface should be silky enough to slide through the fingers, but not so much so that it's easily dropped. I think some dapostar makers even add extra weight with additional heavier fabric, while leaving a silky fabric on the outside.
