One thing to maybe mention for getting the rhythm down for the strumming pattern, is ghost strokes. The idea is to keep your strumming motion going, but only allow the pick to contact the strings when you want to. Some of the “strokes”, either U or D, will not contact the strings at all. This “ghost stroke” is to simply keep your strumming hand in rhythm, and to set it up for the next stroke. So when you play D, DU, U, DU, between the D, DU you are still bringing the strumming hand UP, except you are not contacting the strings. This puts you in position to strum Down for the DU. The same thing happens between the U, UD, but just the opposite. You the Up, then your strumming hand goes down without contacting the strings, which puts you in position for the UD. This of using ghost strokes was a game changer for me to stay fluid, in time, and maintain the natural “moving strumming rhythm” of the strumming hand. Before that, everything was very herky jerky, because I was trying to “pause” the strumming hand in order to be in the next position for the next strum. Wow, I know that was long, and I am sorry. Hopefully, you could put together a Short lesson on ghost strokes So the herky jerky Strummers our there can smoooothe It all out! Thanks, great lesson!

I don't get you intro strumming, your patterns of down ups don't count to 4, what is the timing, I can't do it by ear, I need to see it written before I feel that I am correct, then I can do it perfect forever. I don't get the slashes could you please use 1 + 2 + 3 + 4 + etc.... I play down strums on the numbers and up strums on the ands (+) all while keeping my arm moving.....
@news4amyp

Dude, have you lost your mind? Why don't you get out a piece of paper and do the oh-so-difficult task of translating the D/D/U/U/D/U to your requisite D+U.......? I have a hard time believing you are asking someone to do that for you. Does your mommy still cut your meat for you as well? Oh, and by the way, this song is in 4/4 time and the fact you can't count four beats is no excuse for telling a teacher his timing doesn't "add up." you sound like a spoiled brat.
@mrkattm
8 жыл бұрын
Really, your mean, I asked a question, what is wrong with that, obviously you did not totally understand my question because your pathetic attempt at humorous criticism missed what I was asking. I really don't get D+U either, if D is a down strum and "+" is the up stroke then finally the U is also an upstroke then it would be Down UP UP, so this really makes no sense. BTW it is the teachers job to answer questions and provide clarification, it should never be an insult to a teacher that a student asked any question, even a dumb question provides feedback to the teacher as to where his student is at learning the material. I hope that making me feel stupid has made you feel superior and gets you the recognition that you think you deserve.
@brianyoung2223
8 жыл бұрын
+Michael Katt Let me clarify it for you. The way it is written, the "+" is not an upstroke, just the "U."
@mrkattm
8 жыл бұрын
Thanks and I kind of see that, but what I was referring to and was criticized for asking about was the intro (2:38) where he wrote the count to be d d/u/d/u then again at (3:18) it is written as G - d d/u/d/u which if you count the d as a down beat it only counts out to 3 not 4 also there is a space after the first d, what does that mean, how should that be read and how should it be handled with your strumming hand? Any clarification would be appreciated, and thank you for taking the time and kindly explaining and clarifying, you are a good You Tuber.
@brianyoung2223
8 жыл бұрын
+Michael Katt oh, I see. I think that the answer is that the quick plucking of the open G, then hammer on to the second fret of the A and then the open G is the first beat in the four count measure. I imagine that you are a new player, like me. I have found that it is important not to get too attached to the strumming pattern. The actual strumming pattern to this song is the plucking, then D/U on the G chord, then D on the C chord then U/U/D/U on the G chord because of the pauses, but he is trying to make it easier here. Listen to the song and I think you will find I am right. Good luck.
