Thank you, thank you, thank you. This info is gold for a beginner who is baffled by learning the chords. This video contributes greatly to enjoyment of this instrument.

Thanks so much for this. Fun fact: I started singing "Puff the Magic Dragon" whenever I heard Pachelbel's Canon coming from the radio around Christmas time. To my mind it's the same chord progressions. I will have to try it out!! Again, thanks.

This us fantastic. I just got my first dulcimer this week and once I string/tune it this weekend I'll definitely revisit this video for practicing the chords.

Thanks! That gives me some ideas for cords I haven't found yet. Same progression works with "Hook" by Blues Travelers. I appreciate you taking the time to post it, and enjoy your teaching style. Fret numbers help too, by the way.

I sequenced a basic accompaniment to this on a small portable synthesizer. (Roland J-6, for those who are interested.) My music buddy was absolutely infuriated and refused to play along with it. That was maybe a year ago. I just had my first dulcimer lesson last Friday. And now I find this and I think I'll pull out that track and mess around. Thank you. (Here's my favorite version of the actual piece, so far. Honestly, it's more fun to play than listen to but I like this one. kzitem.info/news/bejne/kq2fuIascWKWm4I )

Are the fret labels glued on? I am a newbie and want to add note labels to my Dulcimer but I am concerned the gule will damage the wood.

There are many easy ways to get a mountain dulcimer; there's a great FB group called Everything Dulcimer where you can ask who has an extra one, and in my website's page 'Dulcimers 101' I have links to several builders.

Well that's more like it! I like regular traditional folk American music not so much the mountain Bluegrass sounds

I'm not entirely sure about the usefulness of learning chords whwen it comes to the dulcimer. Whenever I have wanted to play something, I have bought or downloaded the tablature which tells you which strings and frets to play. You learn the fingering and the rhythm and you play the song. I don't know of any music for the dulcimer which tells you the musical notation as to what chord it is and you go from there. You get the sheet music and the tablature for the finger placement, as you were demonstrating. Then, off you go to playing a new song. The names of the strings are: bass, drone and melody. Not top, middle and bottom. And you can get by with one melody string.

Learning chords lets you play something without tablature, like if you were playing along with a friend who only had guitar music.
