Trying to cram as much knowledge as I can this week until Sunday for a concert 😂😢 using a canon AE-1 and always LOVED those black and white shots!

Hi Rider! I really want to get this video series up and running. It was one of the worst performing videos I have produced but I am still going to do it. I even went out and bought an OM-4 to do it. I always wanted one. I used 2 AE-1P's for a while. The company I worked for let me pick 2 of anything they had. I had a black one and a chrome one. When I was tinkering with auto modes I liked shutter priority better than aperture priority. The only reason I changed was I got 2 Minolta X700's with off the film plane metering. Those were the days! Thanks for watching -R

Did you push your film? I remember using a lot of ISO 1600 film, I think it was TMax 1600 but it is apparently no longer available and has been replaced with ISO 3200 film, or pushing 400 speed film by two stops to get 1600. If I did colour it was always pushing the film. While pushing film increased the grain it was still acceptable and sometimes even added something to the pictures taken. While I agree that pictures were still very possible using film, and camera technology from the 1980's, it is much easier today. With auto-focus lenses and now Image stabilization and much cleaner high ISO images the potential for great photographs is much higher. And with most, if not all, modern cameras eliminating the split focusing center point it is much harder to do accurate manual focus photography in a very dynamic situation of a concert. The dynamic range of even ISO 1600 film was amazing. I have photographs that I cannot print because everything I tried does not capture all of the information available on the film. There is one photograph in particular where there is a bright light shining through the guitar player's hair. That shows fantastic detail in the hair but is very much overexposed for the rest of the image. If I print for the guitarist then the overblown area is too distracting and at the same time hides some interesting shadow detail. I like what I have available to me today but appreciate shooting on film as I did initially. Maybe I should try it occasionally as well. Thanks for the video, although I did a lot differently than you showed with processing your film (I used plastic reels) Also consider a changing bag for the times when you need absolute darkness.

I increased development times a bit and changed the way I agitate. Basically the same as pushing. I never used the meter so setting to a higher ISO wouldn't have mattered. The agitation changed seemed to keep the grain size under control. I just ordered an Olympus OM-4 and want to see how good the spot metering is on it. I am going to check into getting a diagonal split image focusing screen for it. I have a Plustek scanner so that will do the scanning for printing. I thought about a changing bag and decided to go into a bathroom and roll the film. I was quick at it a long time ago. Gotta be like riding a bicycle. I hope people are not taken back by the video. The point of the video was there is a lot to using film other than a camera, film and Walgreens. We're going to have fun. Thanks for watching! -R

Things are crazy around this place at the moment. I was lucky enough to get the video out for this week. This series is going to be nutz. There is so many things to cover and we are starting to get into our season. I ordered a few things for demonstrations in future videos for this series. Hopefully I will be able to do it justice. The good news is that I will have some shows coming up to photograph with film soon. -R
