Join Nathalia in this unofficial guide to Madrid from a “madrileños” or a Madrid local. Nathalia takes you on foot through her hometown city to enjoy the sights, sounds, and quintessential tastes of Madrid, Spain’s capital city. First stop on the walking tour is El Retiro, the main park in the city that is a sort of central park to the residents of Madrid. Spacious with wide lanes for walking and biking, the park is a gorgeous place to start your day.
Next up is a jaunt down the Paseo Prado or the museum walkway named after the famous art museum Museo Nacional del Prado located on the same street. Nathalia ducks into the Museo del Jamón to give us a sample of the Spanish ham that is the centerpiece of much of the tapas scene in Madrid. You’ll also get an introduction to a tortilla, a Spanish dish that defies your expectations of a Mexican tortilla. Spanish tortillas are egg dishes stuffed with potatoes and onions that bear no resemblance to their Central American counterparts.
Last but not least we step into Mercado de San Miguel, the largest food market in Madrid, for a bite of jamon and wine. Leave room for Madrid’s peculiar delicacy, “bocadillo de calamares.” This fried calamari sandwich is a mouthful to say and to finish.
