New subscriber here. Awesome video, thank you for sharing the book with us. I just downloaded it and it seems pretty interesting. Only the music is a distracting bcuz the volume is a little high so it would be better if you lower it a bit. Best of luck buddy

The volume is a known problem. I will improve in the future. I am a full time data scientist and part time KZitemr. Video making is not my speciality. Also, I don't have an easy way to turn down the background music and turn up the voice over. Once the video is up I delete the source files. The audio, which was multiple files, becomes just one track on KZitem. I apologize for the inconvenience.

Bro, it's trivial to adjust the volume levels, don't be so lazy. If you're gonna do it, do it right. Don't reply to this with more excuses, just figure out how to adjust the volume levels if it's a known problem.

@@iLikeMyOwnPosts LOL this made my morning. Seriously man, if you're not going to give a 2 minute stats book recommendation without properly compressing the audio, then don't waste my time with it. It's also kinda a boring topic - I think there should be some cars driving around in the background to spice things up. And you should win stuff by watching.

@@iLikeMyOwnPosts I agree with you. When I lower the music the voice over goes with it. Once in YT all tracks merge to one track. My only other option would be to delete this video and upload a new one with audio fixed. The comments go along with it. It would be a completely different video but with the same content. What would you suggest? It does not matter much to me, I was assuming having a suboptimal video with good discussion in that chat was a better option for new viewers than a delete and replace with no discussion so that is the trade off I picked so far.
@d1ma894

i think he meant for the future. An easy suggestion would be to record b-roll footage of you showing the cover, flipping through some pages etc, and recording the voiceover separate using something like Audacity. Then you can combine the video and the voiceover in apps like Adobe Premier Pro, Sony Vegas etc. Then add music. Since in those apps, all the audio channels are on different layers/tracks, so you can adjust lets say the music track to be quiter without affecting your voiceover. This shouldn't take long at all. love your book reviews! keep at it

A problem with statistics texts is that they do not have a large market, and also the authors only receive a small percentage (maybe 10%) of the price. Being able to use Markdown does make life easier, but authoring a book can be thousands of hours of work. That also need to be edited, although some texts I've seen are absolutely awful.

@Ken-er9cq

@@impulsesystems It depends on the area. First year texts generate massive profits for publishers and authors. They tend to be large texts, so while not cheap they are better value. Sometimes they don’t make a lot of changes at each edition. Some academics have the joy of teaching something like linear algebra that didn’t change in 30 years, although they have probably added some work on how to use computer systems.

@@Ken-er9cq I remember waiting a whole semester for a recommended new book, authored by my lecturer in electro-magnetism. All first years dutifully ordered it unseen and we didn't see it until the end of the year! It turned out the content did not match the course work in any way, so that was my message to find other text books, use libraries etc. I have been a tad skeptical since! But yes, some textbooks seemed 30-50 years old.

Not so much! The chapters are short and feels like a reader with some prior knowledge of stats will be able to extract more from the text. (It does a wonderful job of highlighting some philosophical confusions, but that somewhat presupposes working knowledge of the mathematical side of stats).

I wouldn't recommend these books for a beginner. I read a similar book called Elements of Statistical Learning by Trevor Hastie, Robert Tibshirani and Jerome Freidman. Even I was struggling reading it as a Master's student in Business Analytics.

@17utk@@badateverything2931 , hey folks. Statistics student here. This isn't a learning book for beginners. It assumes some level of fluency with mathematical notation used in statistics textbooks and explains ideas more for the practitioner rather than for the beginner. Its *very* well written, and if one is inclined, I'd recommend reading it. However, a lot of the examples are within biology, public health and some historical datasets, if I recall correctly.
