You are simply fantastic! I have reviewed over 100 such videos teaching Thai, but you are without a shred of doubt the best. Way ahead of others! You speak English like the native speakers, that makes it easy for us. And you can explain so well. Best of luck! P.S. would love to know what inspired you to teach Thai.

Thank you so much for such a kind comment. It's very encouraging to hear that. As for my inspiration to teach Thai, first of all, I absolutely love learning languages and I want to use my language learning techniques to help people become a successful language learner like me. I also want people to know that learning a language doesn't have to be boring, it can be learned in a really fun way. Please feel free to check out "PickupThai Podcast," Thai teaching materials that we've developed based on the methods we used to learn foreign languages and became successful: pickup-thai.com/about-pickupthai-podcast/ Hope you enjoy them.

Thanks for your comment. It depends on what you want to say because the usage of "to take" is very broad and it can be translated into many different words.

Thanks for the comment. Please see the answer to your question below. "ผมอยากซื้อ(อันนี้)ให้คุณ [phǒm yàak séu (an níi) hâi khun]" = "I want to buy it for you." "ผมซื้อ(อันนี้)ให้คุณ [phǒm séu (an níi) hâi khun]" = I've bought it for you.

Hi how to use the word taungkhan as want?
@pickupthai

"tâwng gaan" means "to need." It's a stronger word than "yàak."
Hi, first of all thank you for the videos, they are of great help. :) Next year I am going to Thailand and I am a little worried about the food I will be eating. I am vegan, which means that I don't want to contribute to animal abuse in any way. I don't eat: meat, fish, eggs, milk, honey. I guess it's a similar to เจ. What would be the best phrase to say to a Thai person to make sure that he/she perfectly understand this concept?
@pickupthai
6 жыл бұрын
I can't guarantee that everyone will perfectly understand what you eat/don't eat (not everyone understands the concepts of veganism and vegetarianism), but the best thing you can say to people is "ผมกินเจ (แต่กินหอมกระเทียมได้)" [phǒm gin jay, (tàe gin hǎwm gratiam dâai)]. It means you're vegan but you can eat garlic and onions. หอม [hǎwm] is onions and กระเทียม [gratiam] is garlic. Thai vegans consume neither meat, eggs, dairy nor pungent herbs like garlic, onions, leeks, shallots, chives etc. A lot of Thai dishes are made with garlic and onions. So, if you only say "ผมกินเจ [phǒm gin jay]," apart from meat, eggs and dairy, people who understand Thai veganism correctly will also not serve you food cooked with pungent herbs. I hope this helps. Kudos to you for being vegan by the way! :)

I didn't expect such a detailed answer, thank you so much! I'll memorise your sentence down pat! Kudos to you for knowing so well what a vegan person may or may not eat in Thailand. :) I guess these rules about pungent herbs make sense in Buddhism.

My pleasure. I myself tried to live a vegan lifestyle 3 years ago (I'd been vegetarian for 23 years prior). But I could only stick to it for six months. Shame on me. It's really tough. But it's one of the best things you can do to help make this world a better place! I hardly consume any dairy products except for ice cream (that's my weak point). Anyway, if you need more help getting by as a vegan in Thailand, please feel free to ask any questions. I'm very happy to help. And I support veganism 100% :)
@alex-fy3uu

It is clear from what you just said that you have it in your heart to know what is compassionate towards the world and us. :) I myself have only been vegan for 11 months; prior to that I was consuming great amounts of animal products of any kind. With 23 years as a vegetarian, you've done such a gread deal of good for the animals and the world! I wish I had done as much. Personally, I don't see myself ever going back to consuming animal products of any kind. Yes, it can be quite "complicated" to stick to it, but I think that if you are determined to make this a lifetime choice, it will eventually become second nature. I guess I have to learn to embrace all the little inconveniences with a stoic and serene heart. :D It also helps that I made good vegan friends (maybe easier in London than anywhere else in the world). Thank you for offering to help me, お言葉に甘えさせていただきます!

It's great you have made lots of vegan friends. Those are hard to find but I imagine they can be really great support once you find one. My whole family (extended family included) are vegetarian. So it's pretty easy for me to be one but none of us is vegan. When I went vegan in 2015, I thought I made a lifetime choice. Sadly, my vegan life ended so soon. I know I need to go back and watch those reality videos recorded in slaughter houses and dairy farms. (The reason why I went vegan in the first place). Anyway, let me teach you some more useful phrases :D To say "No meat," say "ไม่เอาเนื้อสัตว์ [mâi ao néua sàt]. เนื้อสัตว์ [néua sàt] means "meat." And "ไม่เอา [mâi ao]" is used to express that you don't want something. Please keep in mind that although most people understand that both vegan [เจ "jay"] and vegetarian [มังสวิรัติ "mangsawírát"] people do not consume meat, not everyone understands which do consume eggs and diary and which don't. Lots of people are still confused. And even though none of the Thai dishes contain dairy or cheese, many of them often come with an egg, to order "without eggs," say "ไม่ใส่ไข่" [mâi sài kài]. Some foreigners got the pronunciations of ไข่ [kài] "egg" and ไก่ [gài] "chicken" mixed up, so make sure you pronounce the words correctly. Some people who aren't very educated on the meatless lifestyles may also ask if you can eat fish or seafood, so in the worst possible case scenario (where you have to explain everything in details), say "ผมไม่กินเนื้อสัตว์ ไข่ นม ปลา แล้วก็อาหารทะเล" [phǒm mâi gin néua sàt, kài, nom, pla, léaw gâw aahǎan talay] which means "I don't eat meat, eggs, dairy, fish and seafood." :D แล้วก็ [léaw gâw] means "and." Most traditional Thai desserts are made with coconut milk, so they're naturally vegan but some may contain eggs. To ask if something is vegan (any food, not only desserts), you can ask "นี่เจรึเปล่าครับ. [nîi jay réu plào krúb]." Sometimes, you may also get questions like "กิน...ได้ไหม [gin...dâi mái]" meaning "Can you eat.....?" To say "no," say "ไม่ได้ [mâi dâi]" and to say "yes," say ได้ [dâi]." Lastly, to ask if the restaurant has vegan/vegetarian options, you can say "มีเมนูเจ [mii menu jay] / มังสวิรัติ [mangsawírát] ไหมครับ [mái krúb]." The word "menu" refers to a dish in this context. I hope this helps. Enjoy the vegan food life in Thailand. We have plenty of good Asian vegan food! :)

The sentences in my video are just example sentences. If I were talking to someone, I wouldn't use "phom" to refer to myself because as you know, it's a male pronoun.
