I work in a hospital where there are quite a bit of Hmong patients. We had an older patient in her 70s that just came out of surgery and her Filipino nurse wanted to learn the word pain (mob) in Hmong because my shift was almost over. I was trying to teach her but she just couldn’t get it right and finally she got it. Anyways she wanted to be the one to ask the patient so anyways she said it in the wrong tone and said ‘mov’ meaning ‘rice’ 🤦♀️. So of course the patient said to me yes I want rice, I want to eat I’m starving. 🤦♀️ So I had to explain to the patient she meant ‘mob’ pain and that she wasn’t Hmong. The patient started laughing and thought it was so funny! And we all started laughing. The patient was a cute little old lady. Bless her heart ❤️ Tone is very important

It's always bothered me to hear someone taking tones lightly, with comments like, "They understand me even though I don't bother with the tones." As an amateur linguist who studies different languages just for the fun of it, I study tonal languages precisely for the fun of pronouncing the tones. (Danashan Mong is my favorite tonal language, followed by Mandarin Chinese.)

The explanation of the tone and language is pretty good overall. The tonal pronunciation not as much which is normal for most non-native speakers of any language. At 6:00 the correct pronunciation is 'cim siaB' whereas it was spoken as 'ciD siab' - m is a soft neutral tone whereas D is a more pronounced higher tone. Great job nevertheless 👍. Way better than most if not all Western Hmong nowadays who cannot even speak nor comprehend their own language.

Please don't be offended! simply want to correct it to make it right: "paus" = "the start"; "tso paus"= fart/pass gas; koj tso paus = you fart/pass gas. It is not correct to say "you fart" = "koj paus". The word "paus" is a noun and "tso paus" = to let gas go or fart; "tso=let go".

I believe this is referring to @3:51 regarding the "s" tone. Kuv Paub/I Know =Noun + Verb Kuv Pauj/I avenged =Noun + Verb Kuv Pauv- I changed =Noun + Verb Kuv Paus- I Fart = Noun + Noun Hence, the word "Paus" does also mean "Fart" (when referring to it as a noun.) When you add "tso" to the word "paus" then it becomes a verb. It is very rare that we would use the word "Paus" alone to define "The beggining" although i get your point. When i hear the word "Paus" i automatically define it as "Fart". Now when i hear "Hauv paus" then i define it as "The beginning".

@@Tswv863SarahGoreYou did a wonderful job! As you mentioned, a slight change in tone completely changes the meaning of the word. Thus, be extra careful when pronouncing paus vs. paum. At 4:07, you pronounced the paum instead of paus, so it was very awkward and funny. You are so right; accuracy does matter. To a native Hmong speaker, we can hear the tones. Other than that, I find that this video is very educational and enlightening, from the perspective of a non-native Hmong speaker. Thank you for sharing and keep them coming. :-)

Lol!!! You know, I never thought about re-learning Hmong language. A few years ago, I had a stroke and I lost both language (speaking and writing), Hmong and English. Now I'm trying to re-learn our native language and man... I did NOT know how hard it until now. Lol. I'm really glad you're interested in our Hmong language. The sad part is, most Hmong people don't really want to learn our native language at all. They just only want English. If anyone don't agree...well, go to see your family functions: wedding, funeral, party, birthdays, Hmong New Year, etc. Most people under 40 usually speak English. Try talking to the other parents. Try. Their children ONLY (or at least, most) understand English. Why??? Well, it's because Hmong people won't teach their children. They only talk English to their kids (urrrgg...). Anyway, if I need to re-learn our native language, I'll look for your videos. Keeping up. P.S. Your language sounds a little funny, but it's ok...your video is a lot better than regular Hmong people (they can't teach). Lol.

I could be wrong but English does have tones too. For example of these monosyllable words such as "me, he, we, they, bay, two, him, you, blue" they all have the Hmong tone of "S". If we say these words in any other Hmong tone, then they would be hard to understand by an English speaker. Other example words such as "take, write, bike, snake, stop, pop, would, could" carry the Hmong tone of "J". "What" has the Hmong tone "V" along with the final sound -t. Thanks.

How did I end up here? I have no idea since somebody sent me a link, but what I get is that Basically "the word" (or its meaning being more precise) means=vowels+consonants+music. Basically the range can be played on the piano with the pressed pedal))) I even tried to it works))) I never knew that there are languages like this. The closest I know is that in the Middle Ages' musicians wanted to create the language based on music only. No words just music to convey the thoughts. Getting back to Hmong: I would say that this is the emotional language. Hard to think using its conceptual space. Even the way the concepts are written (Western way vs. Chinese way) defines the thinking a lot. Here you bring the emotion into the thought. Dead!)))) But it is cool to feel in this language.

This is a great video, but because of the rather obvious error in the word "fart", it would be good to redo it--and then if you do, (speaking as an English teacher myself--and having learned Mandarin), it would be a really good idea, after you finish with the four tones in the word paus, that you say those four tones with that word one after another. We really need to hear the contrasts clearly. Another problem, is that right at the beginning you are not making clear that you are illustrating the tones with a pattern like j, s or v and it's only later that I understood that. It would be a good idea to have a board where you write these things on for clarity. I think you are a good teacher--you probably don't want a video to show mistakes--just take the time to do it over. That would show that you are a conscientious teacher.

I appreciate the feedback. As you can see I have many replies about my mistake and have worked hard to double check all my materials even in the post recording editing phase, not only the pre-recording research phase. I felt that it was a mistake I learned from and has continued making videos on other subjects that people could keep learning from. I really appreciate your feedback and will take it to heart!!! :)

Pat McCormick What a surprise. Are you learning Hmong? Is your family Hmong? I’d love to hear what they think. And please keep me posted on your progress! If you have any requests, I’ll add them to the queue. :)

I'm trying to learn though some different videos. I just joined your patreon and am going to access the worksheets to see if they will help. My wife and her family are Hmong.

Mandarin is much easier to learn. Chinese does not have much grammar. Only the writing is difficult. I heard you only need to know 1000 words to speak Mandarin fluently as you can combine multiple wort to make a new word. E.g. cow meat = beef.
