@@User7688.--_ Thanks, but I think there is way too much anxiety in ppl when tackling dog training, especially for first-time dog owners. Great video, I think the one thing that I might have missed is the length of the leash, it would be hard to give the dog the room it needs for corrections with a 5 foot leash and that’s what I see most people use. Also I love the fact that he said that you don’t want the perfect heel, it’s a lot of work and for most of us we just want a companion that will be well behaved.

You can let them sniff as much as you want but the sniffing can’t stop the walk. If they get close to pulling than you correct no matter what they are doing. For example, if a dog is marking and it interferes with the walk than I will continue to pull the dog when it is marking. The best time to let them pee and sniff is when you stop and give them the permission. That way when they see a dog off-leash they will look at you for permission just like how they had to look at you for permission to sniff and mark.

@FinalAffliction

The good thing to tell people would be NEVER take your dog offleash. Untrained dogs will get a good trained one killed after a bite happens. You got untrained dogs off leash all the time, it walks beside them until a rabit, another dog comes, ect. then he run over to a trained dog, they get in a fight now both dogs are put down. How are you supposed to go off leash before you learn a heal. Its harder a dog outside following you perfectly with no leash than it is to learn heal. If your dog cant come when called even with distractions it wont do a heal perfectly, then you for sure cant walk him with no leash. Even if you get to the point where you can walk him with no leash, your dog needs to be absolutely perfectly trained to perfection, and have full respect for you or it will eventually run after a dog or a dog will come to you and your dog may get put down. I dont know man but it seems you try to skip steps with dogs and it gives the average dog owner who uses them as a pet or companion the false idea that they can walk their dog they see maybe 3 hours a day with no leash.

... When a Joel Beckman video ends and KZitem autoplays into some random dog trainer video it is VERY offensive! Like, "Who in the hell is this guy? That's not Joel". Come on KZitem, get with it you guys! I have watched a lot of your videos and have gone back to the prong collar. Why? Because I DON'T DO ENOUGH STOPS, because (apparently) I CAN'T DO THIS ALL DAY! :D This video shows me what I need to do. Thanks for all the free help, man! Does this "prong-less" technique work with 80 lb German Shepherds who don't care about correction (or feel any kind of pain, no matter what they run their head into!)? I'm going to go REALLY do this technique you have just demonstrated and see how he does... ... I had put his prong back on him after trying your flat collar techniques for a couple days because he was choking himself out when I was holding him back from going after other dogs/rabbits/cats and I was worried about his trachea. I should have been trying to get in a position where my restraining of him was delivered as "down and to the side" corrections as opposed to just trying to pull him back from above when he is trying to go attack something... but it is pretty tense in that moment. He is strong. Funny thing about him is that after a year of walks with a prong collar and almost NEVER giving him actual "pop" corrections, just merely wearing the prong makes him not pull, whereas, on the flat collar he loses all his good manners and pulls just a little sometimes. I better go do a bunch of stops. All day! Thanks man! Your service of offering free help WHERE YOU EXPLAIN WHAT YOU ARE DOING is helping far far more dogs and owners than you will ever know... many of us who cannot really afford a dog trainer right now. Thank you!!!!!

If possible, would you be interested in making a video that showcases some of your best trained dogs showcasing these behaviors (loose-leash/off-leash walking, recalling from play, etc. in highly distracting environments)? Tried with my girl (7 mo cockapoo) first time today, she’s doing sooooooo well! I tried Zak George’s method since she was little, rewarding every time she checks on me and started with in the house then around the block but it never lasted passed few houses, the most I could get her to walk with no leaving/pulling was one block. And who has the time in the world to keep doing that every day, plus I want her to play and enjoy herself with other puppies? Soon I just gave up, because she’s little and even if she pulls occasionally it’s not dangerous and I always have control. I pretty much gave up on loose leash walking now, and she was always on harness because I don’t want her to choke. I still reward her when she looks at me while walking but it’s always whenever she felt like, not on my term. Very thankful to find your channel! I watched a dozen of your videos yesterday, and couldn’t wait to try it on Lola today. And you know what? We not perfect I had many corrections but she had her best loose leash walking with me challenging her stopping randomly, away from her interests and even on the field she plays with other pups! Very effective, efficient, and just simply works! Thank you very much!

It took me 6 months of patience and training myself so I could be a better leader for her. I had to step up my game and really research dog psychology and huskies in particular. I made sure to socialize her asap but lucky for me she always had a great demeanor. You’re gonna make mistakes, forgive yourself, and grow from them. Also, make sure to protect your puppo at the dog park from other bad dog parents, make sure your pup understands you’re the alpha and will always protect them. I made that mistake with my last doggy by not stepping in when I should have. Wish I would have had these vids to guide me ages ago. Good luck 🍀💗!!

@Beckman's Dog Training, is there any variation or margin of error for walks with different dog breeds? I adopted a ~5 year old GSP, and I'm wondering if it's possible to ruin a hunting dog's hunting instincts. He pulls on the leash regularly, and I want to know if that's at all permissible based on breed, or if the same general rules apply to all breeds. I'm assuming the latter, but want your take before I go too far into training.

I have an eight yr old GSD. In my experience, it does not take away, ruin, or diminish her hunting instincts one bit. It's innate to them. I do not let her pull at all. Give an inch. She’ll take a mile. Because of her breed, I do not let things slide; I always follow through, even when I don't want to. With her size and being a shepherd, I do not leave anything to chance, for her, for me, and others, and critters. She has to listen to me. 😊

One thing needs to be understood, in most cities it's the law that you MUST have a dog on a leash in any public place. I would NEVER, and have NEVER, taken my dogs out without being on leash. My dogs cost $2,500 and I have no intention of risking anything happening to them even though they are well trained.

The pieces in the Badlands Complete Dog food vary in length and are VERY hard, almost too hard making it a choking hazard for dogs that eat small size kibble . Can the Badlands Company ensure a smaller size dry kibble please. For this reason I'm hesitant to buy it again. My dog is 17 lbs.

I think this guy is truly amazing.I am learning sooo much. However my 6 month old border collie will not take any notice of me when people, dogs or smell distract her. Her nose is on the ground for nearly the whole walk despite repetitive, regular correction, treats don't work nor toys. The only change of reaction from her is to lie down, often in middle of the road and refuse to move! I've tried JB's method of strong arm on collar but she merely rolls over and mouths/ bites my hands, twisting/tornoqaying my fingers in the collar so I have to let go. Any suggestions Mr Beckmann Please? Diolch yn fawr= thanks v much in Welsh

Hey Joel, I have a 12 week old puppy. What would you recommend for young puppies to prep them for off leash training? At what age would you transition to this correction technique? Thanks!

This is, for me, the most important video so far. LLW works great but I really want to walk my little boy off leash and also enjoy crusing around but without a perfect recall and disciplined OLW this would never happen. I see people walking their dogs off leash everywhere but guess what, there's a lot of the dogs that just don't obey their owners commands, at all. Some do to a certain degree but most just don't, they come if they want to, they lunge at other dogs and all that stuff. This is terrible

Hello sir, first of all let me just say that your videos are great source for a new dog owner like me. I recently brought home a Jack Rasel Terrier, she is a 3 months old, adorable little puppy. Is It normal that she sleeps around 15 hour's a day? She don't eat a lot eather, she might be stressed a bit since she changed owner but she is not hyped about food like the dogs i see all over youtube, i also bought a really tasty treats. Is she just to young or what? Oh just to mention, when she sees me eating my food and i say "come" she is fast as a rocket :-) Every peace of advice would be really appreciated.

Kinda funny. The dog surely knows if he is on or off the leash c'mon. and the crouching while the correction. 😂 Its comical.

I have a big big question. How do I train my dog to have this small radius on the street and walk off leash next to me, while giving him a wider radius in the forest? Because everytime I go to the forest and have him on a 5-10 meter leash, the "normal" leash walking in the city doesn't work anymore. How do I teach him those "different" rules according to the environment?

I don't know how to use what you preach when my Berner puppy (5months) would just stop and lay down when I stop (lazy ass). And that is my problem, he lay down and its over, I need to pull his stubborn tail, maybe he choose to listen to me and get up and we go, maybe I've to drag him for couple of meters. He will pull on the leash only in two situations, one when he nees to poo right now and looking for a grass to do it, and two when we are walking with my kids and they are running forward, he try to keep up to them. Otherwise I'm pulling him on the leash 50% and he is walking beside me 50% of time😕

Is it too much to expect this from a 6 month old puppy? My puppy can only keep it up in certain environments. I remember your video about the timescale for training puppies and it makes me wonder if I need to cut him some slack for his puppy brain at 6 months but I also worry about him developing a bad habit of pulling which recently just started if we are in a particularly wild and exciting environment.

Thank you - Your method of leaving the house on your terms and the quick correction has been working very well. But, when a dog approaches she goes nuts and barks and hits the end of the leash and so I use the correction. She does look at me (yeah), I treat her - but then she continues to bark and reach the end of the leash yet again 😳 - and this is the cycle. Maybe it takes awhile? Would love to see a video of a walk when the dog continues to bark/hit end of the leash even with correction and your process. I’m probably doing something wrong. Sigh. Thanks for all your informative videos!

Maybe try turning around and walking back the way you came after the correction? Then treat after she come with you. I mean even if you go for a 15 minute walk back and forth in front of your house, its still a 15 minute walk and can desensitize them to things nearby?

@runner. Give no treats in bad behaviour. Now is your dog taking the anoyance, the correction, as it is as it is, no pain no gain, and see, your dog takes also the kibble, now you have a dog in a circle. He lunges or the gain is proximation or the gain is a reward in the kibble. And he starts again. You are training repetitive behaviour even if it is hard or painfull or terrifying. You are hardening your dog.

You are missing the main steps in Joel’s Loose Leash Walking method. The walk starts in your house before you even get to your front door. Start over, go back and watch all the loose leash walking videos. They all are different videos of the same method.

I love your videos very much. They are always so clear and instructive. I am wondering if you can help me with this situation. My dog is almost 6 months old now (I adopted him at month 3),. We bonded very well and he is so attached to me that it's almost easy to make him follow me on a walk. The hard part is to get him away from me. I thought it was cute at first, but now, I sort of want to have my own personal space more. For example, at first when I was playing the piano, he would lay maybe 3 ft away from my piano and just enjoyed the sun shining through the window (and hopefully my piano). Then, starting a couple weeks ago, he would lay on my foot and it's a bit inconvenient because I needed to step on the pedal when I played the piano. Now, he even tried to jump on the keyboard when I play. When I walk around the house, I feel that if it's possible at all, he would stick his nose on my leg. Fortunately, he doesn't have very bad separation anxiety, so he is fine when I leave the house or when he goes to bed at night. However, during the day, it's just a bit overwhelming to me sometimes. When I am at home, I feel like I am the one that's been watched by my dog, not the other way around. Any suggestions? Thank you so much for making so many wonderful videos and tutorials.

I've always practiced door etiquette with my 11 month old belgian malinois but still have pulling issues unless using a prong or a thin slip lead, tried this method today with some success, but he'll jump and bite at me in frustration, a behaviour I've managed to stop in most situations. Any ideas? Would a gentle leader help in my situation?

At the end you said you don’t ever want a cue that means go nuts and stop paying attention; so every time you work the dogs you expect this level of attention which makes sense and sounds wonderful. I’m struggling with how to apply this method when perhaps I’m at a friends house and I want the dog to go play in their backyard with other dogs, or even in my own back yard? What if I’m on a hike in my field and I want my dogs to play? What if obedience class is over and I want to let her go play with the other dogs off leash in the building? Is it okay to let them have the ‘go crazy and go play’ time in specific locations or will it negate the other training? I have an 8month old puppy I’m trying to decide what level of training I want to do with her to be able to have a dog that doesn’t leave if I want to ride horses and have her come along.

What about non food motivated dogs? I have a husky I’ve trained not to pull but they will still turn around and wonder off behind me. It’s much harder to correct when they are going the opposite direction.

Thank you for sharing your expertise. Question: I noticed that your body and/or hands get lower before you give the leash correction. How come you do this?
@danebert18
3 жыл бұрын
I think the correction is supposed to be down and to the side, rather than up and straight back. It re-orients the dog back to you rather than a rearing pull that could harm their throat.

If you watch this and feel bad about having to yank your dog by the throat to get them to stay close to you, then I recommend a positive reinforcement trainer - for example Stonnie Dennis or Zak George.

I used this method to help with my dog, she’s pretty reliable off leash already but I’m trying to focus on her with dogs because she will run over to them when they are in close contact, other then that she leaves everything else alone birds cat anything. This has really helped with her off leash heel though, thanks!

But how do I communicate when it’s ok to roam around for the dog and when it should walk close? E.g if I am in the woods and I am fine with the dog exploring in the close vicinity? While when we walk in the city I want it to walk close to me.
