I just got a banjo today, a few hours ago to be exact. My grandpa had one a few years back, I remember strumming absolute music gibberish for hours on his front porch, my little arms were tired and his finger picks dug into my skin but I never wanted to put in down. After watching your first video and repeating those very simple notes, the feeling I never want to put it down has come back into my soul. Thank you 🙏🏻

Thank you, Jim, for being an excellent teacher. I bought my first banjo over 30 years ago. I started taking lessons then, but my teacher was more interested in smoking (not tobacco) and playing himself. Stopped lessons but picked up the banjo every once in a while just to hear it ring. My banjo burned up in a house fire 15 years ago. I mentioned to my wife this year how much I missed it and she surprised me with a new one for Christmas. I started taking lessons again last week, but the teacher started off expecting me to play Cripple Creek. I checked out your lessons and I think I will stop paying that guy and just learn from you!

Hi Jim! I think you are just great and I am so happy to have found you! About a month ago when I got it in my head to learn something about the banjo, a family friend was nice enough to loan me a beautiful instrument, and he told me lots of cool stories about it, but alas he left me on my own to figure out how the thing worked. I tinkered around on it a bit before coming across you. I actually found you first by looking up "Rainbow Connection" which of course was way beyond my beginning ability (your video about it was really wonderful by the way). Then I came across these lessons and now I'm really hooked! I so appreciate your clearness and patience and encouragement. I find myself thinking about the lessons even when I don't have the banjo in my hands, which I think is really helping get these first few lessons in my mind, which I find later translates into my hands. That's the mark of a great teacher, which I think you really are. Thank you SO MUCH for helping me get started learning about this amazing instrument - I have so much more appreciation for it now and forever!

I bought my banjo over a week ago and have been practicing with your lessons. My husband even started to learn the banjo with me! We have never played a string instrument so it has been challenging but we practice every day to get better. I am gonna stay on Lesson 2 for a few more days cause I still hit the wrong string sometimes!!

Great videos, Jim. I’ve wanted to play the banjo most of my life so I bought one five years ago and barely touched it. One of my new year’s resolutions was to try it again so I went looking a for a youtube teacher. That’s how I “met” you. You have a great way of presenting the simple things about playing without talking over my head. I love the way you instill confidence in your students too. I put in the work and I can’t wait to get to the next video. If I finally learn to play- I’ll owe a lot to you.

Hey Jim i am a 67 year old sax player with a missing digit on my pointy finger on my left hand, I’m left handed i made myself a banjo and am now learning to play with your amazing help, i have had to make a pick to make up for the short fall on my finger, i used 2 Ernie Ball picks with the blade from one soldered to the end of another, it works, I’m still on lesson 1 but happy with my progress, thanks for your tutorials pleas keep them coming

Jim can I say thank you for these wonderful lessons. Your ability to teach is fantastic. I’ve been playing the Tenor Banjo 🪕 2 for years mostly Irish Traditional stuff, I started learning it during COVID and I’ve had a 5 string sitting about the house for a while. You have inspired me to dust it off and give learning it a go. I’m only on lesson 2 but really enjoying it. Please keep the videos coming

Ive been wanting a banjo for a while now but never really payed much attention to the technique of playing one. So I got some finger picks and tuned my guitar to DGBD. I Know it's only 4 strings and sounds nothing like a banjo but it's still fun doing those rolls, slides etc. Makes me want a banjo even more now. BTW your videos are the best I've come across.

Got my banjo two days ago. I’ve only had 30 minutes after work to play practice the rolls both days and that’s only because I’m so excited I put off doing housework. Now my house is a disaster and I no longer want to work I just want to go home and practice. My life is in shambles and I’m having a blast

Jim, you are a perfect teacher to me. nicely paced lesson, not to much hoohaa and a real relaxed energy. futhermore i have to thank u for the ernie ball fingerpicks tip, they make a world of difference. the banjo rabbit hole is pretty deep. i never knew earl scruggs before this, but he went straight to my top 3 of best artist of all time. seeing him play with Joan Baez and randy brough a tear to my eye. Earl is a real legend, just like you mr. Pankey.

Sup Jim, I had a dream about playing a banjo roughly a year ago. It was the most fun I’ve had on an instrument in a while, even though it was in a dream. I have been saving up money since and just got a recording king RKO-3s open back banjo. So awesome. I used to live in Kentucky, then I moved to Buffalo ( I hate it here ) and it really brings me back the the good old days. Literally nobody plays the banjo up here and there was only one in the whole guitar center😂🤣😂🤣

Hey Jim ! Loving the lessons, I bought a banjo about 4 weeks ago and have been working my way through lessons 1 & 2, loving the camera focusing on the banjo and you leaning down to talk to us :) :) I didn't take the bit about sitting in an upright chair seriously until just now, just been practising and sat in an upright chair for the first time and it makes playing [very dubious use of the word playing at the moment lol] so much easier. Keep up the posts Jim, keeping me sane in lockdown :)
