normally "Dạ" is used for younger people when they talk to older ones. To talk to younger ones VNese say "Ừ (Uh) or Ờ (Oh that the voice goes down a little bit) or Ừm (Uhm)"... but thank you anyway for the lessons !!

North Vietnamese often use "vâng" and people of South Vietnam always say " dạ". they have the same meaning. but both people in The North and the South are use " dạ" to answer when someone older calls. for example: -Anh trai(older Brother): em ơi ( brother calls his sister) - Em gái( little sister): dạ (yes?)

lol, that is really an interesting question, yea, "Da" is a polite way when talking to an elder. You can say "Khong", without "da", in some situations like talking your friends, whatever. Btw, Yes has so many way to say in Vietnamese, such as "co" "vang" "uh" whatever. If someone ask you "Are you going to the party tonight?", you will answer "co". If some one ask you "You are going to the party tonight, arent you?" You may say "uh". (:
@joshuabrett
14 жыл бұрын
@captainfalldown it is in the North. Fluent Vietnamese speakers will understand both words. And in all reality, neither one is a true "yes" word, since the way to say yes can often just be a repetition of the verb in the question asked. For example: Q: Are you hungry? (Anh co doi, khong?) A: Hungry! (Doi lam!) (lam means very)

a quick note, vietnamese "yes" is diverse unlike in english, there are many words for affirmative "yes" example - "eh, đi xem phim không?" (hey, let's go to a movie?" if you want to say yes then here are your options "ừ, vâng," or simpler, use the first word of the question to answer, "đi" "muốn ăn cái gì không?" and for a yes answer you would say "muốn" and of course add the dạ in front of speaking to a respectable person "dạ muốn"

It's really an interesting video clip. I hope that there is more clip to teach Vietnamese in youtube like this. I am Vietnamese native speaker. So I find that there are some mistakes. We say "tối nay" instead of "tối nây". And "dạ" only used when the younger person talks to the older person for agreement. " Chú có muốn con làm thêm giờ cho chú tối nay không? - Không, cám ơn. Or Ừ, không, cám ơn.
