I came to this channel through a warhammer link, and in the last two hours I've learned about birds in the Pyrenees, and now I'm learning the waltz. Is there anything you don't do? Quite impressive.

Ha ha! The list of things I don't do is very long! You've only missed that I also teach maths! I hope to have a narrative themed wargames thing coming at some point. And got some other stuff in the pipeline too. I'll try to announce them with videos on my KZitem channel.

Thanks so much for this breakdown! I queued up a Waltz playlist on Spotify, raised my work desk so I can stand and I just practice the left and right starting "box steps" all day at work. So happy the gentleman in the first lessons was there too! He kept me motivated since it seems we're at the same level of experience (1/10). I may or may not be waltzing to the breakroom and restroom now too...Thanks Duncan!

Love this thanks! Decided to learn this during lockdown 2. The progression through is things is great - first stepping on the spot with the music, then moving backwards and forward in time. This enables you to get your head around what you are doing before adding your partner in and slowly building it up in stages. I LOVE that you've broken it down this way. So easy to follow. Thank you!

Hey thanks =) If you want a review copy of the accompanying book let me know. (For legal purposes it is, to be precise, a "copy of my book from the author that you can optionally give a review of".) Just Google Dr Duncan James and you should find my email address.

I have a learn sports dance. I am beginner. This video is good.

You are right most beginner dancers are in the outside lane. This never made sense to me because as you get closer to the centre of the floor the smaller the circle. If you are a competent and technically correct dancer, you are going to cover more distance and therefore need more space. Whereas a beginner has need for much less room and could feel comfortable with their own stride on the inside. I am not here to mess with tradition but I always envied their position on the floor so that I was not forced into restraint. If you observe a roller skating speed skate session patrons are advised to avoid the outside if they are not competent for their own protection. Makes sense to me.

You took this so slow but my brain is slower! I don’t know how though you are doing it step by step but I’m just confused because what about the box waltz step?! I have watched many tutorials and they all talk about the box step and I’m like I can’t see it and you never mentioned it either

Some teachers claim you must learn the "box step" first. What I've taught here is a simpler approach. (1) It will not interfere with learning box step later if you wish, although I don't personally recommend it. (2) I have danced in many ballrooms full of, mainly, older dancers and this lesson accurately reproduces an authentic way real people (arguably most) in England dance waltz. Outside of formal dancing vast numbers of people dance waltz socially and this lesson is capturing a common way it is done. (3) Whichever form of waltz I'm teaching this would be my first lesson. It is designed to teach timing, musicality, connection and safe movement on a crowded dancefloor. Crucially for me it gets a pair of complete beginners dancing authentic waltz to a full song very quickly. If you wish you can then go on to learn more.

Hi Charlotte, the point of this video (and it was tested and adapted before release and since seems to be doing OK) is to begin from the absolute complete basics. In my years as a teacher (before making this video) I found that basic stepping exercises are vital for some students who are too stiff and unable to make clear steps. For this reason we begin with some brief stepping exercises. If this is too easy for you then you could stick with it for a few minutes and wait for the dance to evolve (and by the end of this free 35 minute lesson you can dance to a song). Or you might look for another video if the beginning is not to you liking. Hope that helps. Feel free to ask here or email me with more detailed questions if you wish. Love and best wishes, Duncan

Thank you for watching and contributing to the discussion. I would argue that anything is dancing if it is enjoyed by the person dancing and does not cause harm to others. Moving from side-to-side is a fantastic way for many to initially connect with the idea of moving with music. Learning for complete beginners (the target of this video) can involve starting from a simplified initial exercise to capture even those with no dancing experience ... from which a learning progression can occur. Other approaches to learning are available and I encourage everyone to find what works for them.

WTF, what WALTZ?, 5 lessons, nothing but stepping in place.
@drduncanjames
4 жыл бұрын
I think the confusion is that the lesson is split into 26 little bits. Sounds to me like you only did the first 5. If you stick with the learning progession for the whole 35 minute video it should make sense. The intention is for a step by step approach starting with simply stepping on the spot and building to the complete dance by the end. Duncan

Well John. First, is there a reason you need to be so disgustingly rude? Second, not all of us already know how to dance. I live in a very rural area. The nearest place to learn is an hour and a half away. I really appreciate having very clear, broken down instructions that can teach the basics.

I got lost at the start, with the 1 - 1 - 1 .... All done too fast and mind boggling for a complete beginner. I have to look elsewhere, less complicated or broken down better.

Sorry about that. My experience is about one in a few hundred people find this initial bit tricky. You could try pushing on and seeing if you can do the rest anyway. Alternatively I'd often take someone like you (in a non-covid world where real classes are happening) to one side and do it super slowly; after which it's often fine. Email me on drduncanjames@gmail.com if you want extra help direct from me, possibly I could upload an extra video for you with a slower exercise to get you started.
