Since Kokichi Mikimoto invented a method of culturing pearl oysters in 1893, pearl farming in Mie prefecture has developed around Ago Bay and has gained a reputation as the birthplace of pearl farming. Pearl farming requires cultivating grounds with different conditions depending on the process, but during the period when the oysters grow their pearls, the water temperature should be above 13 degrees Celsius, plankton be abundant and the tides flow well. As well the waves must be calm which matches well with the conditions of Ago Bay. As such there are many pearl farms around the area.
