Big thanks for the step by step explanation, you're getting me closer to actually getting the game to the table. I was weary for a long time to try out this scenario as it felt quite limiting but I'm now tempted to give it a try

Thanks for putting this up. The intercept card you used prohibits the use of both air and naval. If you use naval they have a strength boost. You could have moved the long range air unit so it was within normal range and not halved. Finally, it's a while since I played but I think the CVs are eligible for hits due to the presence of the Japanese air units in the battle hex. finally, should have drawn a card if you use the Savo island intercept.

The scenario special rules stipulate that C Pac HQ can activate units ONLY in the New Hebrides. Therefore, Can’t use units in Nouméa (New Caledonia) unless using S Pac HQ.

Set my scenario up and then ... suffered Command Paralysis! Your video has helped a lot. Confused about the HQ Special Scenario Rules. First, "K. US Central Pacific HQ can only be used to activate units in the New Hebrides, its range does not reach into any other hexes." Then, just after Scenario Special Rules M, it says: "DESIGN NOTE: Central Pacific [in Oahu] has oversight for South Pacific HQ [in Noumea, New Caledonia], but it is the South Pacific HQ that is running operations in the Solomon Islands." Doesn't that mean that it should be South Pac HQ in Noumea that runs Operation Watchtower rather than Cent Pac HQ in Oahu?

Wow, that video came blazingly fast! Thanks for emphasizing the turn scale. Playing mostly smaller scale games with shorter turns, this is not trivial to adapt to, for me. Do you know if there are any differences between the South Pacific Map and the big map? An advantage is surely the more focused play area with fewer distractions, but otherwise it looks like all the hexes are the same. I'm looking forward to this series of videos (in case there will be more).

I think the maps are virtually identical, except for a few little notes that clarify distance from HQs and the abstraction of Oahu.

Hi Nathan, My eyes lit up when I saw your video displayed right at the top of my KZitem page, thanks for doing this. I should be getting a copy of the latest printing soon. I already read the V3.2 rules and am psyched to read them again, go through the extended example of play, try out the South Pacific scenario, and then take a crack at Erasmus. Good Luck.

Thanks for this very accessible baby steps introduction. Based on this example, in which the marines were forced to retreat, the U.S. attempt to seize Guadalcanal was a total failure. In reality, the marines stayed ashore and starved, but they held on with no effective naval support long enough to develop an operational airfield, which became the decisive factor in this battle zone. Although the game design is extremely smart, and the intricacies of play look mesmerizing, like most Pacific games, the system seems unable to duplicate historical operations, which were so novel and unpredictable. However, this is one of the few Pacific games intelligent enough to make gameplay so interesting, I might not care about historical events. In fact, I personally believe the course of the Pacific War could have been far different than the historical path if the Japanese had more die rolls like the one in this example. I look forward to watching more "behind the scenes" EOTS videos from you as they make the game approachable and enticing enough to explore on my own.

Yeah this was a poor plan by me, I was just trying to show the basics. A better plan would be to send a diversionary force to tie down the larger Japanese navy out west, while the invasion went ahead.

@@WiseGuyHistory No, I thought the player choices you made worked extremely well for an introductory video. Historically, the Allies did almost exactly what you did, but the marines had already gone ashore, and they held on without naval support for a couple of weeks. The U.S. navy was defeated in the first engagement and did withdraw, leaving the marines very under supplied. This is why things might have gone south quickly in the South Pacific. In any case, the American carriers would NOT have entered Rabaul air range, and it would have been difficult to locate the enemy and make the type of interception you envision. In general, in 1942 it was hard to force combat unless it was in the immediate vicinity of the objective (e.g., Midway or Guadalcanal). For me, the leadup maneuvering to the combat is the most interesting aspect of the Pacific War and most games ignore this cat and mouse drama. Too bad, gamers are missing the naval safaris that makes the big game picture so compelling.

Ouch, now finished listening to the video and it's quite a painful Japanese victory, curious to see if the Allies can recover from this. Also, curious as the Japanese had an air unit from Rabaul - could they sink one US Carrier then?

I get into the habit with of tapping units in a battle, and even have markers for that, so easy to forget whose participating where!? Lol. Why were the US carrier units ineligible to allocate hits against? Once all full strength units are flipped (barring critical hot rolls) if there were air units from the IJN side which there were, hits can be applied to units at range. In this case two CVs could have been hit I think.
