In the late 1960s and early 1970s, millions of teenagers and Red Guards were sent to the countryside to learn from the rural and poorer peasants. Mao wrote, "It is very necessary for the educated youth to go to the countryside and undergo re-education by poor peasants."
This is commonly known as the "Down To The Countryside Movement"
