Nice to hear about your progress man! I actually have Genki 1, I’m only a chapter in, but since I’ve recently learned about MIA/Refold, I’m thinking about just starting with JP1K or RTK decks along with Tae Kim and Tango. Do you think Genki is still worth doing? I wonder if it made for a more well rounded understanding of things for you 🤔
@daniel4nthony
2 жыл бұрын
i don't think genki is essential. in retrospect i feel like my completion of genki gave me this degree of over-confidence before getting into immersion because i knew i wasn't starting from scratch. really depends on you, if you want to have prior knowledge before you get into immersion so it's more "digestible" then go ahead and complete genki to build your base. but if you're someone that's all about optimization then you can definitely skip out on genki and build your base with other resources as you're immersing. however, i will say even after completing genki, immersion is very rough in the beginning. good luck!

Very good video, a lot more 'real'. So many language videos have people who grew up in multilingual households and they spent years living in different countries and they assume everyone is the same.

My parents are actually bilingual, but I never picked up their language (Tagalog) because they were already proficient English speakers. Probably one of my biggest regrets is not having them talk to me exclusively in their tongue, but that’s not entirely my fault. Haven’t seen too many of those other language videos you’re talking about, but yeah people definitely don’t have the same opportunities to pursue things in general so it’s kinda weird for them to have the expectations of others based on their own experiences lol

I actually decreased the new cards per day on the Tango N4 deck to 15, but I started sentence mining a while back and have been doing (15 cards a day (so actually increased the total reviews I do per day LMAO). Although, it's been a lot easier to recall meanings from my sentence mining decks rather than the Tango N4. I'd say the only drawback to this is the increased time in Anki, but hopefully that will fade once I'm done with all my premade decks :D Thanks for watching and good luck with your language studies!

Definitely agree that it's ok to diverge a little from the Refold Roadmap. At the end of the day, those guides are more of suggestions for what to do at a certain point but fun comes before efficiency IMO (although those two aren't mutually exclusive). You have put a great amount of work,good.job! Unless you have a photographic memory you will have to reread.it is why I think doing anki with Tae Kim will be a lot more efficient long term. You did 2h of anki/day and that is not bad. That is a logical amount of time for what you intended to learn. I think you did the right thing going to recognition rtk. Writing the Kanji, if you are not gonna write it then is really inefficient but as long as it serves you it is not a waste of time Nice video and keep them coming. Always nice to see the progress of people

Thanks man! Yeah, grammar is hard to internalize if you're not reading consistently so the SRS is really useful for supporting that need in the beginning. I actually started going through a premade DOBJG deck so hopefully that will help haha! I have a love-hate relationship with Anki (as I'm sure everyone does). I dread those longer review sessions because I only have a finite amount of time to study Japanese every day, so I don't like spending more time in Anki than I need to. Probably won't be posting another video (at least an update video) for a little bit, but I really appreciate you taking the time to watch! Hope your studies have been successful as well!
@MuEnViFitness

@@daniel4nthony it will probably help if the cards are.not too long and complicated haha. Regarding anki, is a well worth investment at the beginning to build a base in the language even if you have to do 0 immersion because once the base is built (hiragana,katakana, RRTK, 500-2K words) then you can have a more.balanced study anki time. Immersing when you know basically 0 I believe is incredibly overestimated but with a base? O boy, that shit good haha

How many hours do you study a day?
@daniel4nthony
3 жыл бұрын
on average i’d say between 3-4 hours but there are days where i’m only able to manage 1-2. in my opinion the number of hours are arbitrary because different people learn at different rates (but of course the more hours the better). the biggest thing is being consistent with what you’re doing!

i like your japanese videos! i'm really glad to see you improving day by day, you are a big motivation. i'm also learning japanese for like 2 months. i was trying the immersion technic at first as well, with a common phrases textbook. i was doing pretty good with the basic info but since i didn't know much about the language itself, my improvement stopped at some point cause i'm not really good at listen and learn things lol... and reading without kanji and vocabulary knowledge was pretty intimidating so i started using genki a few days ago. i'll see the results in a couple months. i was wondering if that immersion technic worked better for you than the textbook informations? do you have any plans on starting a textbook in near future?
@daniel4nthony
3 жыл бұрын
Hey, thanks for watching! Yeah, I would say the hardest thing about immersion is you're thrown in the deep end right away. For me personally, it was nice to go through Genki I & II before starting Refold since I'd already built a base with vocabulary and grammar. However, there are some really good Anki decks out there for Kanji/Vocab that are helpful at the beginning of immersion like the JP1K, RRTK, Tango N5/N4, Core 2k/6k/10k, etc. If I were to start from zero I would probably do immersion from the beginning, but that's just me. It's hard to gauge where you are when you're immersing because you'll never understand everything until you're fluent. However, I will say that after 1 month of immersion, I've interacted more with the language than in the previous 5 months using textbooks. Textbook Japanese is very different from actual Japanese, but over time the more you study, the more you'll be able to make the distinction yourself. Textbooks were great for getting me to the point where I can immerse, but I would say that immersion is what actually drives my learning. I'm thinking about taking a few Japanese classes at my college (they use Tobira), but I plan on using those as supplements to my immersion. Refold is the main method I plan on following for the foreseeable future. Hope this answered your question and congrats on 2 months! Let's keep learning!

if you're watching shows in TL do you keep subtitles in NL on, or is is it better to try to do passive listening?
@daniel4nthony
3 жыл бұрын
I never used NL subtitles when I started. Initially, I didn’t use any subtitles during immersion, but after making this video I started watching nearly every show with TL subtitles because it makes sentence mining a lot easier. Passive listening is when you’re not able to put all of your focus into immersion, so you listen audio while continuing whatever task you’re doing. I do passive listening whenever I’m not able to do active immersion (washing dishes, eating lunch, doing laundry, etc). You can be as extreme as you want with it, some people just skip passive listening all together, but the idea is you’re constantly maintaining contact with your TL. Never do passive listening in times where you can be actively immersing. You get way more benefit from active immersion than passive. It’s hard to stay engaged when you’re not understanding anything at the beginning, but if you keep with it you’ll see results. Hope this answers your question!

Same! I sooo have to disagree with the "don't focus on writing" which a lot of people say. I just love writing, and I feel like the stuff you write stick a lot easier. So when I did wanikani, I set up a rule where I had to write each kanji I failed to answer.

Hey! To download manga, the top comment on this reddit post links the website I use. www.reddit.com/r/ajatt/comments/kmrjug/monthly_immersion_dump_6_into_2021/? I would recommend getting a Japanese OCR reader so you can scan words you don’t know and look them up using yomichan. There’s nothing wrong with using Japanese subs in the beginning. In fact, Refold doesn’t recommend people to read manga until stage 2B, so most beginners watch with Japanese subs until they reach that point because most animes are strict manga adaptations (i.e. the sentences in anime are nearly identical to manga).
