Mandarin speaker here, which is also in the hardest cap to learn for English speaker by the way, and I can say from 3 years of just watching KZitem, I became fluent and understood colloquial terms and cultural almost as well as a native American English speaker. This is all done without being in an English only environment. I think this is the best kind of input, by consciously immersing yourself in the language you want to learn. If you want to learn more after the 2 months, you should really consider searching for some form of Japanese media you would be interested in, anime or anything else. After the 2 months, you should have the bare minimum down already and from there, consume the media in its purest form. If it contains audio, don't use English subtitles. Worked like a charm.

I have kinda the same situation! I'm from Russia and our language is pretty hard even for native people. I've been watching English content for 4 years and I can freely understand and talk in English without being in the speaking environment. I've also started to learning Chinese and have been learning it for 3 years but I've run into problem of searching for content that I'll enjoy in that language. If it's not too hard, can you list some big Chinese youtubers that you'll recommend?

Not trying to come off as annoying but just a heads up when you tried to pronounce apple in Japanese at 6:49 it sounds like "di-n-go" when it should be pronounced more as "li-n-go" . A common tip i give to people who are learning Japanese is when coming across "ru" they should pronounce it as "Lu" with a "L". In Japanese the L is practically non existent so they replace it with the "R", if that makes sense.

I have tried learning different languages but what helped me the most was figuring out how I learnt English and Chinese (First language and mother tongue) when I was very young. For me it was just exposing myself to an environment with those languages and from what you're doing, you seem to be on track to learn Japanese really quickly. Another thing is that Duolingo teaches pretty formal Japanese and not how natives usually talk. Good luck 💪

Yeah I think that's the most important part in learning a language, not exactly understanding words, but understanding application. English isn't my first language, I used to watch cartoons and youtubers that were in english, add that to my regular english classes and I learnt fluent english before I understood the nuances of my native tongue. (this resulted in me being like 10 years ahead of what I think my knowledge would have been if I was solely on my school english. Upside is that I had good grades, downside became annoying classes whenever I was being taught something I had already learnt from people not entirely versed in the language they're teaching)

Not to say I'm an expert at language learning, but I've been self-study for 2 years and I'm N2 now (enough to work in Japan), tbh if your goal is to just do well in a trip in Japan, Duolingo or Anki flash card isn't that bad, but if really want to get good like damm good, just wanting to learn because "it sounds cool" isn't gonna get you anywhere (in term of motivation). I can't count how many times people have ask me to teach them Japan just to quit in 2 weeks, people who learns languages should understand this pain lol.

You seem like you're doing great at learning a new and interesting language, having close friends that you speak to that know fluent Japanese is very helpful. I do have some other tips on how to get more accustomed to the language (I learned fluent German this way.) 1. Subtitles, you say you've been learning some Japanese from watching anime, and that's real helpful, you can also either play a movie in the language you're trying (and have English subtitles) to learn or have the subtitles in Japanese. The first method is the most effective though. (German Star Wars is probably the funniest thing ever) 2. Don't rush yourself, I learned simple German because I was going on a trip with my extended family there. I then expanded my knowledge by talking to "strangers" who helped me understand more complicated rules of their language. 3. This is kinda going to contradict what I just said, Force yourself to use German words (Japanese in your case) at all times, even if you live alone, try to pronounce things that your looking at or things that your doing. Thanks for reading and 幸運を! (Google translate: good luck!)

Hi! Language nerd here :3 Japanese is a very cool language (and a hard one for English speakers), so you're brave for trying to learn it! Be careful with _only_ using duolingo as your learning source though, the course becomes much worse the further you go and there are plenty of mistakes in it. Besides, Duolingo is moreso supposed to give you a preview of the language instead of making you fluent, so if you want to actually get to an intermediate or advanced level, you should really dive deep into the language and use more sources than Duolingo.

I went a few places to practice my japanese and they would only speak to me in english with no japanese just because I was a foreigner! I think one of the best ways is to surround yourself with Japanese content I recently started watching an old Japanese series, it’s from 2005 but I’m still enjoying it ;) I find myself catching lots of phrases and words from the language..learning new languages from a young age is very smart to move! good luck

I think its awesome to learn a new language. I am wanting so badly to learn Korean because I knew Japanese was wayyyyy too hard for me so I thought start with a step down from that.. haha but I am hispanic and I don't even know Spanish. but it is true if you use it with people in a conversation daily it sticks if you hardly use it at all.. nothing will stick or stay. I hope your friends are really teaching you different pitches too xD cause man oh man. its weird if you say something in a different tone it can mean a whole different thing!

Are you going to vlog the Japan trip? That would be epic! Also, there is another language learning app called Babbel.

make sure to space out learning and take breaks! This helps prevent burn out and makes you remember better. Getting enough sleep every night also greatly helps with memory

As someone whose learned english from zero and now has spent about 4 months on learning japanese I can say that the most important part of learning a language is getting a hold of how the structure of the targed language works (ex: grammatics and knowing how to distinguish between verbs, subjects and objects easily etc) and then start to immerse on midia. I would recommend to you Tae Kim's japanese guide since it explains most of the rules and stuff, and also the core 2K/6K Anki deck for remembering vocabulary more easily ( theres a video of an youtuber called livakivi explaining how to set it up ), both of these options are free, good luck on your language learning journey!

I wanted to start learning Japanese too so I took your advice. I didn't really like Tae Kim's guide so I didn't stick to it but I now use Anki daily and have learned near 400 words so far, while immersing from a Japanese Minecraft playthrough (nana825763) and a gaming and tech channel (Seto Koji) which both Livakivi recommended so I just wanted to say thank you for giving me a direction to start my Japanese learning journey.
