I'm in the solo phase of my training. I have the hours, and I meet the requirements. But I can't solo until I can get more consistent in my landings. CFI says I'm right there. This morning he said "I want to solo you so bad, but I need just a little bit better landings." I'm so close but I either over flare or I can't keep the airplane stable. Too much left and right. I know this is an older video, but I'm soaking in all the landing videos. Side note, I thought I might solo yesterday, so I wore my Lewdix "Remain clear of my prop..... " thinking it might be the one. But I didn't get there got sweaty and didn't get it washed in time for today's lesson. Opted for my Piper shirt since I'll be soloing in a Warrior. You almost made it into my shadow box though! LOL

Best advice I was given with respect to the flare, once you cut the power put your eyes on the far end of the runway and try to keep the top of the cowling lined up w/the end of the runway. In a Cirrus that technique seems to keep you at the optimal flare angle.

I struggled to land! My instructor left and I got a new one. He asked me "Can you see the runway?" I said "No" We got a cushion for the next flight. I could see the runway and started to learn how to actually land. I am 6 foot tall and no-one thought about what was going on. My height is in my legs not my body. I have been struggling to get air time right now. The weather is not cooperating! Live in Colorado Springs. My biggest issue lately, once in the air, is not "flying to the chocks!" Instructor was ready to let me solo again but I screwed up a perfect landing by dropping the nose once the mains touched. I am not current and that is why I need instructor approval. I belong to a military aero club that has very strict rules. Going for my instrument rating right now. Still doing the ground school. Anyway, I enjoyed watching your landings. Humor is always good.

Student pilot in Canada, I find the Teardrop entry interesting. We don't do that in Canada. It's just midfield join if overhead or straight in. 45 degree entries are frowned upon too.
@JoshuaSobel

Funny. People can do midfield and then directly into downwind here too. Not like it's frowned upon, but it's always listed as an "alternate" technique.

I struggled in landings so much, I am glad that you are doing much better than me and hope to see your solo, soon. Two things helped me that may help you too, low approaches on a long runways to remember the sight picture that I needed to hold the aircraft to bleed the airspeed and second one, no flaps landings which you need to bleed more airspeed and hold the aircraft on ground effect longer.

I remember when I first started working on landings. It was difficult and then one day it clicked. Then I soloed and between nerves and less weight it was like I was learning to land all over again. I also learned in a Cessna though so In reality I didn’t have to know how to land a plane to land.

Sometimes the piper we fly seem so just want to fly and floats until it decides to not fly anymore. Then it lands with distinction. Especially when the speed is slightly off! 🥲 could it be the ground effect? Can’t be the pilot.

I think Cherokees are easier to land than Cessnas because they have the oleo shock damping landing gear and the Cessna has the springy gear that makes the plane jump or balloon on touch down. Well I experience that as I mostly fly Cherokees and then also Cessna 177Rg. My trick landing a Piper is flaps to zero immediately at touch down to avoid bouncing along. Cessna flaps are electric and too slow for that.

I’m doing my first set of landings in flight training and my issue comes with the flare. I’d be coming in nicely toward the runway but the amount of back pressure causes me to balloon sometimes. I'm 250 landings in and its still a bit of a guess; every landing has different weight, density altitude, and headwind/gust. When you do IFR flights and switch from instruments to visual reference on short final it adds a fresh difficulty. (even with a circle to land, which is similar to a pattern, it may not be at 1000agl, so more variables)
