We head off to Bonnie Doon for some much needed serenity, a home away from home. Bonnie Doon isn't too far from our main destination - Mount Buller. I've never been to Mt Buller before, never been skiing (other than on water) or snowboarding - only ever tobogganing. I wish I had started with skiing! Next year, I suppose. Rhi couldn't get into skiing when she was younger and preferred snowboarding. She'll have to give it another go!
Snowboarding is difficult to learn, especially as a person who is chronically ill. I wouldn't recommend it to others like me or to anyone just starting out. It's not easy on the body as you put yourself in such an awkward sideways position and have to somehow coordinate your limbs which are essentially stuck to the board. If anyone has ever said it's like skateboarding - they are wrong. When you skate, you have freedom to move one foot to push you along. It's not the same as snowboarding, which is much more restrictive. Plus the snow surface is unpredictable, and gets very uneven or choppy after a lot use. It's difficult to coordinate your own limbs, an uneven surface and other people around you. Yes - you will likely need more than one day to get used to it, but I can't imagine putting my body through any more torture to figure it out. By the time the 2-hour lesson was over, my energy was completely depleted and I had no more strength to practice. Even though I was starting to get the hang of it, I'd practically need to live at the snow to even attempt getting used to it enough to enjoy it. I definitely want to try skiing next!
The thing with comparing snowboarding to surfing, is that when you fall off a surfboard - it doesn't hurt! Same goes for skiing vs waterskiing. Water is soft, snow... not so much. When you run out of energy like I did it's best to call it a day because you will likely hurt yourself more if you continue.
So yeah, if you have major physical limitations like me, I'll tell ya you're dreaming if you want to master snowboarding! In general, learning to snowboard in one day is not ideal.
We bring our green cheek conure, Minyip, to Bonnie Doon with us. She had a nice change of scenery and got to meet a horse for the first time. It was very cute!
