It always baffled me that they went away from the ruler after the charge/wave/surge. Why? It’s so easy to mill tick marks on the scales. I understand a lot of people don’t use it as often but it takes zero engineering to include it.
@annekedebruyn7797

I agree. I DO use the ruler enough to make me not want to miss it. Heck, I even use the 3cm ruler on my Victorinox MiniChamp. It's odd. It's another number you can add to the amount of tools on the multitool too. Seems like such an oversight unless they WANT the Surge to be the one with the most tools (21 for the Surge vs 20 on the Arc.)

They should atleast have an easy design to have custom printed on the sides for fine measurements. For bigger measurements I still use the trusty $1 measurement tool, the 6" one dollar bill. (Any US denomination really)

I still think the design on the Wave/Charge/Surge is better than any of the Free series. Only thing the Arc has over the older models is the new Magnacut blade.

Leatherman fell and bumped their heads. $229? Ain't no way. They can keep it. $130 is pushing it for the Surge. I carry a Surge daily and I use the heck out of it but it's more of a $100 tool. All these new tools with magnets are a no-go. I have a Free and those magnets collect metal dust and are a pain to keep clean.

"Pro-tip" for the loose pocket clip issue on the Surge. I figured out that a tighter clip is possible if you close the opening on the part of the clip that inserts into the tool. Not too much and very carefully because I have broken clips before doing this. This is the 3rd time (three different Surges) I've done it and it works. No heat needed either, just patience lol. Hope this helps anyone who reads this.

The price point makes me think they are trying to not compete with their other products. I wonder if they believe this to be their high-end offering for the tool/EDC community, and not necessarily for the average multitool user. The Cadillac of their product line, if you will. With this being said, I think it is overpriced, but I will dutifully pay up for mine when the are available.

It shouldn’t be as close as it is, but at the Arc’s price point, all of a sudden older models are a viable alternative. The $80 differential could get you a nice knife steel for the surge, more t-shank options, and a full bit kit. If the Arc came in at what everyone had thought the price was, $189, it would’ve been a no brainer. But the fact that a 20yr old multi tool holds its own again the newest and most premium option is very telling. Looks like engineering/material costs may have been more than LM realized. Either that or they are taking advantage of everyone clamoring for a new magnacut multitool. Lot of money.
@appleztooranges

The cheapest magnacut knife is well over $100. So if you’re in the market for both a magnacut knife and a leatherman, the $80 increase might look like a good deal. The high price also makes Leatherman’s other products look like a comparatively good value.

@@slingerofbeer1346 The Arc sounds perfect for you. But you have to be committed to never have it leave your hand or your pocket, or it WILL disappear on you. Still pretty comparable with the Surge gen 2. Only difference is the T shank adapter and the small bit driver. Would still prefer the Surge Gen 2 for the price. Free technology I feel still doesn't add much to the functionality of the tools themselves. As for the Blade, well they still do the same function, you just sharpen it a little less but still too much money to carry around on your pocket. Just put a small bit driver from a Gen 1 surge onto the Gen 2 and the Surge still beats this Arc.
