I meant to come back to Amanda in the movie and how her character kind of learns to trust people because she and Ruth bond over the deer incident. She also realizes that GH and Ruth are all she has right now due to the situation in the country. But even though she learns to trust GH and Ruth, wouldn't this whole ordeal cause her to have even less faith in people overall...? (The scene with the deer surrounding Amanda and Ruth wasn't in the book)

Yes both Amanda and Ruth were rude . As Amanda, yes I would be put off and distrustful, not of their color but the intrusion. But you are not of color and do not understand Ruth hearing and reacting to the skepticism that the property belongs to them. Amanda stated it doesn't seem like it's their house in private to her husband. Why not? They are even dressed formally??🤔

I do mention the racism in the book, but forgot to talk about it as far as the movie! I should have said that as time went on, Ruth was responding to Amanda's racist comments. I didn't think it made sense for someone in today's day and age to be surprised that a black couple own such a nice house. Not to mention that Clay and Amanda live in NYC where I would assume they interact with plenty of wealthy people of color. Like maybe if they were from somewhere that is known for being mostly white I would have found it more believable. But that is probably naive of me, because even in places as diverse as NYC I'm sure there are plenty of racist people.

Thanks for this review of book and movie. I just heard of that Netflix series today. My step son is watching it. I then ordered the book from our library. Glad I didn't buy it. May also read Cabin at the End of the World. I am an English major who also have 30+ years in high tech, two countries. While I was in England around 1994, A British mini series entitled WILD PALMS came out. Worth watching. The technology in WILD PALMS is identical to Apple's new wrap around, fully computerized head set that is making its debut. Chilling. Watching ' Leave the World Behind ' has already had an effect on my step son. He and his wife can visualize the grid going down nationally/globally. If nothing else is taken away, it should be, how we are going to deal with life without electricity? Some years ago Toronto lost the grid to a solar storm. It wasn't pretty. We have semi retired to our working family farm in a small town. A tight knit town that should be able to band together in challenging times. After building the first computers in the 1970s through 2016, I can live with them marginally, but also can cut the cord if necessary. Not going down with that ship. One might wish to read up on how to live a 1930's lifestyle...

I think you’re SPOT ON about the book. I was so excited to read it because I’d heard about it on NPR before it came out. When I got it and started reading, I had the same response as you did ( i.e.: wordy, over-explaining, weird analogies, goes on too long, etc). So, when I heard it was being turned into a movie I wasn’t that excited to see it. I really only watched it bc I’d read the book and the movie was produced by the Obamas (the first for their production company and honestly, I thought they could have picked a better book for the first project). But the movie was actually better than the book. I usually say read the book then see the movie, but in this case I think you can skip the book altogether. Movie wins, hands down.
@JetforChrist

That was my takeaway from the review! As is seldom the case, it seems the movie was more entertaining. I find it interesting that FRIENDS is only mentioned once in the book while its theme permeated the whole movie. Even Phoebe's line at the beginning right before they lost service was so apropos. Very interesting changes were made to the film, but I understand the Obama's use of this template for their debut .

I enjoyed the concept of the book. The execution was a bit lacking. I think the changes from the book to movie made a better story. But I fully enjoyed the movie more than the book and I’m of the same mind with many here, this is definitely book adaption that it’s not necessary to read the book before the movie… or at all.

I hate Money Heist for this reason but I liked the movie because it was meant for people who don’t think about the things as much as. Like the tesla scene was so spoon fed but I still had to explain it to my parents. I would finish the characters sentences a few times and my mom is so impressed because she didn’t get it. Sorry corrected version: The movie is horrible. Makes no sense. So, technology fails, and the world falls apart in a couple of days? Might I remind whoever wrote this that there are some of us still alive when there were no cell phones, No GPS (I went to flight school in the 80s and the best we had were VOR stations). No G1000 displays, all steam gauges. Low end planes still do not have auto pilots. Cars had no fancy electronics; distributor cap no on-board computers. My Suzuki Samurai didn't come with a radio. I had to install one after market. I remember using something called a map and compass for land navigation in the military and my wife always had the map and was the navigator on our vacation trips. TV was analog with rabbit ears, no cable and we had NBC, CBS, ABC, WOR, WPIX and PBS (NYC). AM/FM analog radio of the air. No VHS, DVD. Everything was hard wired, no digital switching and nothing was connected to one another. TVs were Black and white and worked on tubes. Then U turned them on they took a little while to heat up and come on. In college I used a manual typewriter to do my papers. No word processors. Research was done by going to the library and checking out a thing called a book. My point is we lived in the 60s and 70s without the technology we have today and still went about our daily lives. It is so stupid to think that in a few decades we have become so dependent on technology that if it failed the world would instantly fall apart. FYI, even on newer fancy airplanes with all the G1000 modern glass cockpits, U still have old traditional steam gauges as backup in a emergency. If my autopilot started to misbehave, I would simply pull the mechanical circuit breaker and shutdown the autopilot or any other computer system that acted up. If U want to see a perfect movie on what happens on an aircraft when the world goes to crap, I highly recommend Apollo 13 with Tom Hanks. A 100% better movie and a true story. Kevin Bacon is in that one also. Don't waste ur time with Leave the World Behind. A waste of some very talented actors. I am a fan of all of them. The only reason I tuned in.

I watched this a couple nights ago, and I think the fact that the director for Mr Robot and the Obamas were involved made me far more receptive of this. I am in MA, but across the street a cop has a "Join us or Die" flag, conversations are tense when you discuss the world as half the people you run into have very strong opinions they got from the internet or TV. It feels like the world is precarious in America and so in that stew of unease this movie appears and it is tapping into that feeling of impending doom that many of us feel. The use of color, the changing art, the fact that cyber was the vector for this all seems plausible. I work in IT and it is uncommon to see much security around tech, there are no guards, there are few staff and many of us work remote, a janitor who knows how to hack could absolutely get in and cause chaos, once you have physical access to anything, it's yours. This movie was disturbing in so many ways precisely because it's plausible. A lot of people are waiting for a big end of the world event, and it's them I am scared of.

Hey "Why the book wins" I just finished watching this movie, and it wasn’t enough for me. I heard about this movie from @Patrick bet David podcast, and the reason why I am on your channel is because the movie didn’t tell us what happened after the city got bombed. So I was so curious to know if someone as an explanation. Anyway, I took about 30 minutes to read all the comments including the first one in the comment section which is yours. Then I come to understand that most people do not comprehend that this is more than just a movie or a book. This might or be a message to people in America of what is coming. While I was watching the movie I was more focus on the subtitles than images, because I wanted to understand what was being said. And if you truly pay attention to all the subtitles you will understand that the movie has lot of similarities with what really going on in America. PS: Let talk about this scene when G.H and Clay were going back in forth with Danny. Danny didn’t want to give them the medicine and refuse a thousand dollars for a five dollar medication, this triggered me and make me think about our currency " The Dollar" Do we ( us the people ) really have control over our money or will the dollar be valuable in time of chaos? Well I am going to stop here, but I love the movie well produced by the Obamas LOL.

Totally disappointed in you review. I think the book and movie were great. You are NOT spoon fed information, quiet the opposite. You are given very little information. All you know is there is some disaster and there is no communication. People dependent on phones and TV now have to survive without them and decide if they can get along. This was a great character study and it was nothing like the Cabin At The End Of The World. Also the movie used great symbolism and editing. This movie and book just was not for you.

Everything isn't for everybody. But, She keeps saying spoon fed. And at the same time she doesn't even mention The T.V show Mr.Robot. the totally missed it. Thinking she is being spoon fed while all along missing things.. And also the world isn't coming to an end. Its a civil war.. Meaning Ameica, not the entire world. YoTou think you were spoon fed while at the same time missing the entire meaning.. I appreciate your thoughts though. Different strokes for different folks. ❤

I enjoyed the movie well enough. 100 percent agree with all the criticisms tho. Got real sick of Julia Roberts pretty quickly. Same for Ruth Scott’s character. Both attitudes sucked hard. Haven’t read the book however generally no movie is as good as the book that inspired it. Example 12 years a slave the book was amazing the movie uhhh well it was not good. And that’s how it usually is when you read a book first. Marvel Studios is still trying to match its comic books that so far still eludes them. Since books rely on the readers own mind no director or screenwriter can capture the little nuances each reader gets reading a book so I’d never compare the two. I really liked the movie. I didn’t analyze it I just watched a movie that was really good and had things no other movie has. It’s one of the movies you put on to play in the background. My take.

this is actually one of the rare cases where the movie clearly beats the original literature. It's paced so much better and really entertaining, while the book drags a lot despite being only 240 pages long with really short chapters. Additionaly the movie has outstanding production values, with some of the best camera work I've ever seen and a very engaging cast. I don't think I've ever seen a movie and read a book where the film was this superior.

It seems as though he was using the format of a movie script rather than a novel. Likely to get the attention of movie studios as well as the residuals of a novel. Very clever. There are so many movies written only as movie scripts rather than from novels. And many movies I’d love to have been originally novels to enjoy that too. Might be an emerging format for novels.

Well, Amanda learns to open up and trust people, and Ruth learns to give people a second chance. Ethan Hawke understands how comfortable he was and how reliant he was on his wife and now he has to man up and step up for his family. In the end, the "useless man" is the one who stops Danny from shooting them. GH understands that some things aren't conspiracies and that he shouldn't be that dismissive of signs and actual queues. I don't think the kids learned anything, honestly.

Not sure if I'll watch the movie now as you said it was 2 1/2 hours long! This is the first review I've seen of yours and truly enjoyed it, so of course I subscribed. It's not as good as Leave the World Behind production wise but there are a few simmilarities in its set up and in the ramping up of tension. Also some more parallels later on which would be spoilers. Good film anyways and a very entertaining watch.

Wow I feel like I’m the only person here who liked the book. True there were some portions of description that felt monotonous, but they didn’t bother me. I truly appreciated the time you got to spend learning who the characters were and what their lives were like. The interpretation of how people would act in a situation where they had absolutely no answers or explanations, while you as the reader were also experiencing that sense of unknown with only brief glimpses of what was actually happening felt very well written. I appreciated this idea of an apocalyptic event happening and not having an excessive amount of exposition that kept you in the know, while the characters struggled to find answers. The movie on the other hand completely missed the mark. I think it could have done very well with a more artsy approach that was true to the book’s abstract nature. Instead we just got a standard uninspired disaster movie with unsubtle social commentary.

I can't find any joy in fiction books. Even the "best ones ever written." I just feel I'm wasting my time not learning history. I'm drawn to biographies and anything that holds historical value so I can learn what actually happened in the world instead of resourcing to Wikipedia and whatever source online. I appreciate the good writing and the imagination, but honestly, I feel I'm detaching myself from reality for what? A movie or a TV show lasts shorter, and I can come back to my history book and keep learning about how the hell we ended up this way. Yes, fiction is filled with "what if." And yeah, I agree that it also teaches us empathy and perspective,. But, again, you can achieve all that with a well-written historical novel without making up fictitious events. But maybe it's just a point in my life. When I was younger I used to enjoy fiction more. Nowadays I start reading it and, again, I feel I'm wasting my time. English isn't my first language so excuse my grammar.

Movie is horrible. Makes no sense. So technology fails and the world fall apart in a couple of days? Might I remind whoever wrote this that there are someone us alive when there were no cell phones, No GPS (I went to flight school in the 80s and the best we had were VOR stations). No G1000 displays, all steam gauges. Low end planes did not have auto pilots. Cars were all old school, no fancy electronics, distributor cap no on board computer. My Suzuki Samurai didn't come with a radio. I had to install one after market. I remember using something called a map for land navigation in the military and my wife always had the map and was the navigator. TV was analog with rabbit ears, no cable and we had NBC, CBS, ABC, WOR, WPIX and PBS (NYC). AM/FM analog radio of the air. No VHS, DVD. Everything was hard wired, no digital switching and nothing was connect to one another. TV were Black and white and worked on tubes. Then U turned them on they took a little while to heat up and come on. In college I used a manual typewriter to do my papers. No word processors. Research was done by going to the library and check out a thing called a book. My point is we lived in the 60s and 70s without the technology we have today and still went about or daily lives. It is so stupid to think that in a few decades we have become so dependent on technology that if it failed the would would instantly fall apart. And FYI, even on newer fancy airplanes with all the G1000 modern glass cockpits, U still have old traditional steam gauges as backup in a emergence. If my autopilot started to misbehave, I would simple pull the mechanical circuit breaker and shutdown the autopilot or any other computer system. If U want a movie on what happens on an aircraft when the world goes to crap, I highly recommend Apollo 13 with Tom Hanks. A 100% better movie and a true story. Kevin Bacon is in that one also. Don't waste ur time with Leave the Wold Behind. A waste of some very talented actors. I am a fan of all of them. Only reason I tuned in.

I also watched a tv show that Sam Esmail created for Apple tv that starred Julia Roberts. It was the same feeling I got watching this movie. There's something afoot, something sinister. I'm amazed how many people seem to like this movie. Visually it's great but that's all. I feel like it gets lost in what it's trying to say. I haven't read the book so it's cool to hear that the plane crash and tesla cars weren't in it. It didn't make sense that the pilots apparently aren't capable of performing an emergency landing and that the teslas can drive themselves when a satellite phone can't get a signal and even radio is down. Then there's also the characters. Amanda definitely acted appropriately when George first showed up, Routh had no reason to come in swinging the way she did, and it doesn't make sense for rose to be complaining that they don't listen to her when all she's saying is that deer are showing up.

I did not know about "Cabin at the End of the World", so thank you. I just bought the paperback. I am not as critical as you. I enjoyed the novel, or so I thought. Now that you analyzed it the way you did, I do see what you are talking about. The part I enjoyed the most about the novel is how contemporary and relatable it is. He painted a vivid picture of our world as we live in. People are distant from each other, often angry, and unconnected. Devices, jobs, traffic...so much annoyance surrounds us. It's a tired world. It needs reboot. The part I don't enjoy is the fact that the book is tiring as well. And you pointed out why it is so. I can tell the story without leaving any details in 250 words, and here we are, a book. I looked forward to the movie and watched it the moment it came out. I don't enjoy the oil tanker running on to the shore, the plane crashing, and later the Tesla car pileup. I feel these events are too big and they destroyed the subtlety of the movie. Also they all point to this terrible thing called "automatic vehicles" and how they fail when the navigation system fail. I work in technology. The truth is: There are fail safe in all of these systems. Sure. They might have been hacked, but why do we need three events to point to the same failure? And what's up with GH not talking about corpses he saw? I can't think of any reason or any personality that prevents him from telling the adults what he saw. It is kind of important, isn't it? The noise, the deer, and the teeth falling out should be enough. I thought the movie falls into the trap of Hollywood sensationalism, and tries to appeal to a wider audience. That said, I didn't like the ending of the book either. Or the ending chapters. He wrote about what happened "in other parts of the country", which the two families did not experience. How does that help? Up to that point, I was experiencing everything through the family, and now suddenly I play God and know about what happened elsewhere? To me changing view points midway ruins the book.
