Not true. In a nutshell bitwig looks great. But when you start digging deeper you realise most of it is broken. Bounce broker, export audio broken, eq+ broken, they even manage to brake pdc in v5. And if you email them it is broken the answer always one: it is by design. They rarely fulfil user requests and if they finally do it’s way overdue and not required anymore as you use 3rd party plugins. Like happened with MSEGs. They introduce them in 2023. When people been asking for them in 2017. Me personally use plugins with msegs and have no interest to use bitwig own stuff. And by the way the updates focused around devices and almost 0 QOL improvements. But if they do they just give you unfinished or broken feature, tick it off the list and forget about it. This is exactly what happened to quantise audio in v5.1. So I have no idea how bitwig is better. Think about this Ableton made by musicians. Bitwig made by marketing department.

Everything people are saying bitwig can do that Live can't is all false. There's multiple ways to do all of these things Bitwig can do... in Ableton Live 11. These dudes just don't know Live enough. You can run any DAW in Live as another plugin. Meaning... all these bitwig tricks can be done on Bitwig loaded inside Live. If you are too inept to properly utilize Ableton. How do these masters of Live not know these basic Live procedures? For example, this dude on the youtube thinks you have to flatten a midi track or whatever when that makes zero sense when "resampling" your tracks for premastering midi to audio is a standard procedure? And this dude starts the video saying, "you have to flatten to edit" O_o 😂 Once it's flattened... you can't even edit it! O_o wtf is going on in youtube land these days?

RANDOMIZATION- Ableton Live has multiple ways to randomize midi and audio simultaneously, for example follow action or converting any track via transients to a separate drum rack or midi instrument and click "rand" on the side of said midi rack. Plenty of sequencers with random toggles. How is that a reason Bitwig is better than Live when everything can be randomized with a click of a button? To create new progressions on any instrument I use descending 12ths chord arpeggiator, right? The way it functions is randomizing the midi instrument and you simply toggle speed, steps, timing of the randomization. This is the easiest way to create a bassline out of a midi drum beat and it's 2 seconds depending how fast you click it. How much are these youtubers making to pull all this bullshit out of the air thinking us watching are complete doorknobs that can't find the randomize button? O_o

You didn't talk about containers. Racks in Ableton are cool, but containers in Bitwig are basically like racks on steroids. • There are layer containers which are like basic racks in Ableton with multiple parallel chains. • There are selector containers to have multiple parallel chains where just one is active at a time. You can also switch with midi notes. So you could play a synth with your keyboard in a live situation and quickly switch to another sound with certain keys or drum pads on your keyboard. • The chain container to quickly add a dry/wet and gain knob to plugins which are missing it (there are more of them than I like). This is possible in Ableton but in Bitwig it's easier. • Containers to have two chains for the left/right or mid/side channel. This is possible in Ableton but in Bitwig it's easier. • Multiband containers to quickly spilt the signal into 2 or 3 parallel frequency Bands. This is possible in Ableton but in Bitwig it's easier. • Transient shaper containers containers to process the transients with other devices than the sustain part of the signal (unfortunately this one adds a lot latency because it uses an FFT). • With a replacer container, you have a gate and every time the gate opens, instead of letting through the signal, it sends a midi note to an instrument you place in that container. I own that plugin (it's awesome and cheap), but just for fun I used this to copy Klevgrand Fosfat just with stock devices in Bitwig. • Every stock instrument is a container. When you place stock effects into the FX chain of a stock instrument, those effects become polyphonic. Even though you see just one chain, internally, you get 6 chains with synced parameters for a synth which is set to 6-voice polyphony. This also gives you a better overview if you save a lot of user presets for you synths. Let's say you make a sound in Ableton that heavily depends on the effects you added after the synth. If you want to save the preset with all those effects, it can only be an Instrument Rack preset but not a preset for Operator, Tension, Wavetable, ... In Bitwig, you just put the effects INTO the synth and hot after it, and then you can save a preset for the synth which also includes those effects. When you later browse through your presets, you can specifically filter for presets for a certain synth, with or without effects included. • Also some stock effects are containers. For example, you can place effects into the feedback chain of the delay and reverb. There's a ring mod effect which has a sine oscillator with a fixed frequency as a modulation source. You can put effects into it's source chain to process that sine wave before ring mod happens or you could even place a whole synth in there to replace that sine oscillator because at that point, devices still receive the MIDI signal (if there is one in that track. Otherwise you can grab it from somewhere else with the Note Receiver or just grab audio from somewhere else with the Audio Receiver.) • and some more

I think the best thing going for Bitwig is that is not just yet another DAW, but a creative tool as a whole. You can record, mix and use VST with any DAW, but DAWs that come with their own set of creative tools are an instrument themselves. With that said, Ableton also is a suite that is a massive creative tool. Then you get Max, of course, and Ableton also simply has more resources, articles, tutorials and videos, with a bigger community. That cannot be dismissed easily. Nothing wrong with using multiple DAWs.

Bitwig is trash. I call it Ableton Live copycat. Even names of some plugins were copied from ableton. The rack, macros, everything is somehow copied in Ableton Live. The UI is disgusting. Can't even lock the automations, when I'm chopping audios it follows the automations and it's all over the place. Stock plugins look like they were made for kids. The browser is a mess. Clip launches don't look as intuitive as Ableton Live. Just looks like a failed copy of Ableton Live. No originality I'd say.

What's so great imo is how easy the transition is since Bitwig is so similar to Live. Besides bringing so many innovative features which Live later added. Also, having bounce in place is awsome. I always duplicated my bounce tracks, grouped all plugins and then disabled everything + muted the track. That way I'd have the original if I needed to revert back, but it makes each project end up pretty massive with all the disabled tracks. Especially if it's already 120+ tracks. The auto disabling of current crashed plugin in Bitwig is amazing. In Ableton I constantly had to save new version of my projects. By the end of a full track I'd have over 30-40 track files with 1.0, 1.1, 1.1.1, 1.4, etc. Works but time wasted. Bitwig just does everything Ableton does, better. The only place I'd use Ableton over Bitwig would be for gigging. At that front APC40 + Live is pretty solid and it served me well while I was playing records.

Been using ableton live since v8 and remembered when bitwig first came out. It was supposed to be the answer to ableton live and all of its problems, but it was never just right. I went back to it to check up on it over the years and realized that it just wasnt ready for me yet. I couldnt get a good grasp on it and it was so much easier for me to make music in Live. However, on this lastest release of v5.0 of bitwig, I decided after watching this video to check it out again and DAMN. I was blown away. Most of the limitations and issues I have been running into in Live recently seemed to have been addressed by bitwig. I actually am loving how easy Bitwig is to use now and how well thought out most of the UX is. I have spent 24 hours with it and I am really starting to think now is the time to make the switch. Damn this is hard, but after so many years of using ableton live, I think its finally time I am going to move over to bitwig. At least with bitwig I know that they wont take years to release new versions and that they actually listen to the feedback of their users. One MASSIVE thing I am missing though is the midi capture button ableton live has. I like being able to just be jamming and messing around without recording, hit the midi capture button, and then be able to bring up all of the jamming I just did without recording. Bitwig needs this! Anyways, just wondering @Julian, why not just completely switch over to bitwig bro?

I'm switiching - well, I'm getting a lesson on Bitwig in a week because of bugs in Ableton - the only reason. No other features however better implemented in Bitwig, are worth switching DAWs particuarly as Bitwig is comprised of former Ableton coders who switched companies. We're talking VERY similar. That said Julian Grimm - while I certainly liked your video and MY bugs in live are serious... They're serious but yours are monumentally serious! I have NEVER, ever, lost a set as you describe - cannot open a set and you have to simply write off a client piece (like you I'm a professional). Even though Live Support has declined to a mere shell of what it used to be, I feel 101% certain that if you told them you can't open a set for a client, they'd help you. Anyway, all the best and wish me luck as I transfer apparently (depends on how the lesson goes) over to Bitwig.

I'm wondering, If I don't care about sample packs and stock plugins (fx and instruments) is it worth the studio version or I should be fine with the producer version? The MIDI signal flow in MIDI tracks also is very interesting in Bitwig and can be used in a creative way. In Ableton, at any certain point in between devices, you either only have a MIDI signal (in front of instruments) or an audio signal (after instruments or in audio tracks). In Bitwig, you can have a MIDI (yellow square at the top in between devices) and audio signal (small level meter at the bottom in between devices) at the same point. So in the signal flow after the instrument, the MIDI information is not discarded. At first, you might think "why would this be useful?". But Bitwig has these modulators you can put on any devices, even VSTs. Those can be basic modulators like LFOs or envelopes but also more complex stuff. And those modulators might need that MIDI signal. This also means it can make sense to place Note FX like an arpeggiator AFTER the instrument. So the notes are processed for the modulators on the effects but not for the instrument. This also breaks Ableton's rule that you can only place certain devices at certain points in the signal flow. For example, you can place an audio effect before an instrument, which isn't possible in Ableton. That wouldn't make any sense, but it also won't break anything because an audio effect is just passing through MIDI information unchanged. You could also place an instrument in series after another instrument. The second instrument won't pass through any audio from the first one (as long as it's active) but this can be used to quickly try another instrument without deleting the other one or setting up a layer.

The fact that you can create complex sounds within the instrument 'Layer' and then automate them directly into the recording by just moving knobs and turning buttons on and off and it all gets recorded is monumental [ it works amazingly with the Macro buttons in Avenger VPS, it's actually the only DAW where you can do it efficiently ]. In FL Studio 21 you can create a sound from the Patcher and then you have to create knobs for each input and then you can automate them in the sequencer, prehistoric. BITWIG IS THE NEW SHIT! That option doesn't disable the plugin. It makes sure to load the plugin seperate from all other plugins, incase you have 'mixing' plugins or something that can talk to each other, that need to be in the same environent. You can still have it to where those plugins can see each other but the naughty plugins will always load in their own container so they don't crash anything else.

For the buggy plugin problem preventing too loading the session properly, there is a solution even if it's totally pain in the ass. First check the crash log Ableton creates after every crash, maybe you finde a hint there. Drag all the VSTs out of its folder, check if the session is loading, when it's loading drag the vst back in bunches beginning with the ones that you thinking could cause the problem and try to load the session again. Do this ass long until you isolated the troublemaker. Save the session again with all plugins except the troublemaker. Its time consuming but it is working, most of time my NI plugins made problems. Another approach: Open a clean session and drag the tracks from the session that can't load properly into the session until you found the track that causes the problem. This works only if its not a plugin on the master track itself causing the problem.

Stability and project safety was truly breaking point for me to ditch Ableton entirely, even though I've used it for over 10 years prior. I just don't want this crap to happen to me anymore. I always tried different things, but Ableton was my main DAW for longest time until I just figured it gets in my way awful lot too often for what I'm trying to do (and that is generative stuff with modulations that can modulate other modulations, etc, which seems to put Live on edge of crashing). I think the only selling point Ableton still has is M4L, especially if you managed to overcome the learning curve to build stuff yourself. but then again, if you know max/msp, might as well use standalone and bridge it to the different DAW or use PlugData, which has a lot of stuff in common with max/msp.

For Ableton hanging... all you do is run it, dont click "ok" on the error. Ignore the frozen Ableton Live and simply run a new live session. It can recover your work before it "abnormally shut off".

Yeah Bitwig is cool, but no visible gridlines behind clips - makes it unusable to me. I wish to switch as well, but without visible grids? How am I supposed to be arranging anything precise and detailed there when Im blind???

FIRST REASON: I save ten of my time, as Ableton Projects tend to crash and take lot of time to load and render, crash, reenable... with BITWIG just works and does never crash... thats just my personal number one. As bitwig is ten times faster MIDI Engine and modulation... compared.. however ;-)

I would say I left Reason for Ableton, but I dont think thats fair. Really, Reason left me and decided it would rather be a VST than a DAW, which is ironic considering that I suffered years of Reason's idiotic choice to refuse to implement VST functionality.

Bitwig is certainly much easier to comprehend than Ableton. I have both as I started working with Live, but have basically switched to Bitwig recently. Ableton keeps on crashing, its interface is antiquated and it is very difficult to understand. Now, Bitwig is still not perfect. It has no MIDI capture and video track for scoring. I also have not found an option to convert audio into MIDI. I am sure these functions will be available in the future.

Bitwig really, really need AUv3 support for me to continue my upgrade plan. And I don't think AU support is in the works... I would love to be wrong.

Bigwig's solution is better but it's not accurate to say that Ableton doesn't address projects crashing or lagging on startup; it has two safe modes. Holding down ALT while opening a project temporarily disables plugins so it'll load and you can find the problem VST. Doing the same with SHIFT pulls up the project with the default layout. I've never had a layout-related crash but apparently it's possible so they addressed it.

I have literally went through hundreds of reddit posts of Lives stability. Since version 9 it's been a uphill struggle. Most likely due to tge fact some of the devs left Ableton in 2009 to start Bitwig, launching in 2014. But holy moly, just countless issues and people still support it even though nothing is really getting handled. They released the push 3 instead of working on crash protection. And even push 3 has had a lot of issues. One channel that focuses on Ableton for live performances said the reason so many pros use Ableton is because of its stability. If thats true, why are there so many fucking videos on how to fix crashes? I feel like I'm missing something here, or im taking crazy pills. Its sad. Because i saw Ableton as a German icon. But apparently thats not the case as it used to be.

Bitwig modulators are also awesome. Ableton's Wavetable has 3 envelopes and 2 LFOs. You need more? Bad luck. Not possible. At least not without Max For Live, but those wouldn't be polyphonic. At first, I was confused that Bitwig's FM synth has just one envelope for overall volume, but not a single one to just modulate the volume of operators just used as FM source. That's essential for FM synthesis. But that's just not necessary in Bitwig. With the deeply integrated modulator system, you can just add as many envelopes and LFOs as you want. And as long as you place them on a polyphonic stock instrument, they are also polyphonic. I think with the new Clap plugin format (competitor to VST) they can also be polyphonic with third-party plugins. And besides envelopes and LFOs, there are also a lot of other modulators.

So I've used bitwig since 1.0...I had no idea that ableton couldn't do most of these things. I always use the containers to reverse little sections and chop. How else could you even do this? The only thing I wish wig had that ableton has is 'convert to midi'. Sometimes I'll have a cool sample that could use another layer, but I have to write it from scratch, shame.

Yes, man!! The deeper one goes into Bitwig, you don't look back. There are so many different approaches for different workflows that just that is enough. Let alone all the things you mentioned in your video!!

The solution to bring back that crashing Ableton Live session with vst causing that problem are backup files. That's the only way you can save your work when that shit happens. So yeah, they must add solutions for that kind of problems in Live 12 cause that's kinda embarrassing 🙄

If you want to have your mind blown, then hit F1 whenever you have any Bitwig native device, modulator or Grid module selected :) Also in Mix view, you might find it useful to disable clips and instead see big meters - you can do that in bottom-right corner :)

A solution to your stability issues in Ableton: Freeze every track before doing a "Collect all and save". It keeps the tracks at their present state, but plugins are disabled on launch of application. I also have just started a dive into Bitwig, and understand the similarities, but I've been using Ableton for so long, I have yet to find a "major" difference between the two.

Bitwig is my first DAW I have ever tried out. I'm not a musician at all and to make it short, I like it. I could create some cool sounds in 10 minutes after installing it for the first time. I have also do not have that amount of time to try all of them out. I've installed it, tried it out, I like it, I keep it. 🙂
