For those who are confused with C->DE.In 3NF lhs should be candidate or superkey or rhs should be prime attribute.So for C->D correct and for C->E incorrect.And we know if we get a single cross that level cancel.So he has done it in a single column. Same for 2NF As C is a subset of a candidate and E is non-prime so C->E cross.But C->D is correct. But doesn't matter as a cross already exists.

Agree with the question. If as per the video, having non-prime on RHS violates 3NF, then where will the poor Non-primes go? In any case, non-primes need to be determined by some prime even in the highest NF. I think for interpreting it correctly: 1. Decompose the C -> DE into C -> D and C -> E for clarity. 2. C -> E would pass the 3 NF check as there is Prime on both LHS and RHS. 3. Now focus on C -> D. We should take the rule as wherever there is non-Prime on RHS, the LHS shouldn't be a non-prime so that transitive dependency doesn't come in. So this C -> D would pass the test.

Please clear my doubt; while we check for 3rd NF, we check for the condition of Transitive Dependency right, which is in the above video, for E->F, we see if LHS is CK or RHS is PA; in this case, F is PA, and so we conclude it satisfies Transitive Depenecy (In the video, sir had ticked it). But according to 3RD NF, there should be NO Transitive Depency right, then how come we agree/tick something(E->F, F->A) that satisfies Transitive dependency and reject something (C->DE) that does not satisfy Transitive Dependency?

The condition for 3NF is: LHS must be ck/sk OR RHS must be a prime attribute if any one condition is true then we can say the table is in 3NF. But in C->DE, C is a Prime Attribute not a Candidate Key (resulting which the LHS becomes False) and in RHS C can determine both D and E. Here E is a prime attribute but D is not a prime attribute (resulting which the RHS becomes also False) As we know in OR case, if both LHS and RHS becomes False then the result becomes also false. So we can say that C->DE is not in 3NF

I think the appropriate approach to this question would be better to start checking for the highest normal form from 1 NF, not from BCNF (or 4NF, 5NF) because if the f.d fails to fulfill the lowest NF criteria then there is no reason for checking it for the higher NF. In this way, our work is reduced and no confusion remained.

Yes that's what I was thinking. According to 2 NF, all non-prime attributes should fully dependent on candidate key. So here D is a non-prime attribute, so it should depend on whole candidate key which is, for instance CB. But I have the same doubt too. Is the partial dependency of a prime attribute on the part of the candidate key valid in 2 NF. Even though it is valid, one dependency is already violating right. So the above example that have mentioned in the video may not be in 2 NF right. If got to know, please let me know. Thank you.
@KamleshPatel-xe9zo
2 жыл бұрын
Why are we checking for partial dependency in 2NF? Rule for 2NF Is that all the non prime attributes should be fully functional dependent on the candidate key and we also know that C is not a candidate key so why don't we skip that part?
