Lectron seems to have a total disregard for safety. It appears there is no temperature sensing at the removable NEMA 14-50 plug on the V-Box. Also, they sell level 1 chargers that operate at 15-16 amps with a NEMA 5-15 plug, which should be limited to 12 amps (80% of 15 amps). 15 amps is only permitted on NEMA 5-20.

My work purchased 4 units and had them hardwired outside. When the temps dropped below 40 deg and rain misty outside two units had CP faults. In two months of use, we had two units fail completely. No vehicles connected and the units would issue a control pilot error and would not charge. Lectron sent a new unit under warranty and suggested building a rain/weather shelter for each unit. I guess these v-box units are not meant to be used outside without additional weather protection. We are using the supplied j-hook adapters and the pins are dry in the connector. My work is now looking to switch to another brand due to the hassle of sending these units back for repair. 😢

I’ve installed several chargers and frequently use drywall anchors intended for flat screen TV mounting. Most are rated for 100 lbs. As Tom recommends, try to locate a wood stud too. If it’s a commercial application, get the hardware for attaching to metal studs.

I bought the Lectron VBox 40 around a year ago and so far it's been great. I also have a JuiceBox 40. The VBox is in my garage that's heated. The only thing I would like to see different is the amperage adjustment that can be done without taking it off the wall. But I seldom adjust it. The most awesome thing is the display screen and lights.

I agree with the cable length. Although it won't be an issue at all for some people, for me, I needed every bit of the Emporia's 24' cable for where the unit had to be installed, and how I ran the cable.

Good review. I'm with you on the 48A default setting. I reviewed this unit last year and I sent them feedback that it should be set to 40A by default. Unfortunate it's still set to 48A from the factory. Otherwise it's a decent unit, though for the price some others are better with more features in my opinion.

I thought that my default charging set up was 40 A and that I would have to hardwire it to get it to 48 A. I thought that only if I hardwired it would I have to open it up in order to increase the amperage. I’ll make sure that I check the setting before I plug my car in. I don’t have the car yet, so it’s not a big deal. I’ll have time to check.

You have to ask why it’s factory refurbished, was there a simple assembly issue, was it a customer return (maybe just an open box return), or something more serious. You can get a Grizzl-e charger new for $330 which are much better built than these and have a 3 year warranty.

Would you also do a review of the Lectron 20 Foot Tesla EV Extension Cord? It would be nice to know the voltage drop based on current that Tesla can report on screen. Heating after hours of load would be nice too. We live in an RV with a mobile charger setup in our trailer and we can often not park the RV so we can charge or Model Y without a lot of close parking. Sorry for writing on this video, but it is slightly related to Lectron :-)

Hey Tom, While I bet most people buying this will use the 40 amp nema 14-50 setup, did you per chance get to test the heat with 48amps hardwired vs just with the 40 amps? I suppose you already highlighted that isn't quite the best scenario for it based on the plastic melding a bit already at 40 amps. EDIT: deleted the part of my comment about confusion on 48 amps. I misread the chart :) Thanks for the great work!

@@andrewt9204 for sure. I would go for the universal wall connector if it wasn't as expensive, and if it was still possible to Nema 14-50 connect it (I know Tom always recommends hardwiring ;) ). I disagree with your assessment of the ATTACHMENT plug versus MOLDED-ON plug. ATTACHMENT plugs have FAR more robust terminals. MOLDED-ON plugs are terminated to the cord by typically poor crimping that is thermally and mechanically inferior. The NEMA 14-50R (or 14-60R per below) receptacle in WET LOCATIONS per NEC® 406.9(B)(2) is REQUIRED to have either an enclosure that’s WEATHERPROOF (i.e., Enclosure Types 3R and 3RX or better, including Type 4 or 4X) UNATTENDED whether or not the attachment plug cap is inserted or a BOX COVER having a similar Listing for WET LOCATIONS (DWL). If this comes set for 48A CONTINUOUS, then it SHOULD come with a NEMA 14-60P plug. If its SUPPLY cable isn’t rated for 48 A [6 AWG per NEC® Table 400.5(A)(1) Column B] then the Lectron V-Box MUST be set for 40 A CONTINUOUS [8 AWG per NEC® Table 400.5(A)(1) Column B]. IF THE CORD is 8 AWG, the V-Box MUST NOT be HARDWIRED at 48 A CONTINUOUS by that CORD (i.e., plug removed) not addressed by you, but SOLELY via fixed wires through the enclosure knockout (and appropriate wiring method) as you indicated.

Tom, would like to suggest a change to your testing procedure. Having supervised electronics testing for many years I believe you should actually do a functional test of the unit after it is cold soaked. I realize that most failures occur because of overheating but there is a lot of heat generated by the circuit board components and that causes considerable thermal stress when starting from a very cold temperature. It would be a very short test (probably five minutes) to see if the unit continues to function when powered up and charging immediately after taken out of the cold soak. That is a realistic environment for people mounting the unit in cold climates outside.
