Introduction
Thiophene is a colourless mobile liquid b.p.- 84 degC having benzene like smell. It is insoluble in water but dissolves in organic solvents like ethyl alcohol, petroleum ether, ethyl acetate. Thiophene undergoes typical substitution reaction, thus it reacts with chlorine without a catalyst . It undergoes Friedel Craft reaction. Upon hydrogenation followed by oxidation it gives sulphone. This shows that thiophene is aromatic in character. It is flat molecule having SP2 hybridization.
