A Lecture delivered by C.H. Spurgeon,
When the Bible is read well, aloud, to a congregation before a sermon, great blessings occur. It is a vital part of our worship services. Yet Spurgeon almost never read a passage of Scripture to his congregation without giving a running commentary on the text. This habit is rare, as many believe that Scripture speaks for itself and needs no such commentary.
Spurgeon was happy to preach on single verses, but wanted his congregation to understand every reading. Whatever your viewpoint, general ignorance of Scripture persists to this day. In this lecture the preacher gives his reasons, clearly and persuasively.
