Many fixtures come with a preset Kelvin temperature, however having a fixture with an adjustable color temperature means you can choose how your light looks. The number of temperatures and Kelvin ratings available will vary between fixtures. For most, the temperature can be changed with the toggle of a switch on the fixture. Some come with a remote or can be adjusted from a wall switch.
Color temperature is measured in degrees of Kelvin. The lower the Kelvin rating, the warmer the bulb will appear. The higher the Kelvin rating, the cooler and seemingly brighter the bulb will appear.
Generally speaking, it is most visually appealing to use one color temperature in a space. Although variations can be made between general and accent lights to give a unique effect.
Warm and soft white lights between 2700K and 3000K promote cozy environments and are great for homes, restaurants and retail settings.
Neutral and cool white lights between 3500K and 4100K make a space feel clean, neat and efficient and are perfect for offices, classrooms and hospitals.
Daylight lights between 5000K and 6500K are bright with exacting coloration and are often used in museums, print shops and warehouses.
