The extractor's working a treat I see. Kudos to you sir.

I stuck a roll of this stuff to the ceiling of my van and wired it to the interior light so it comes on when the doors open. Love it!

Nice idea for keeping the lock illuminated. I would probably have just used one LED strip, which would be enough for ambient illumination and two part epoxy for sealant.

Only neutral cure silicone should be used on electrical items, the acetic acid cure type (the usual bathroom stuff) is very corrosive.

Hey John... tip for next time - link the two strips at the opposite end to the power feed tail. I would imagine that after you linked them in this movie, when you went to solder the tail on, the links would've kept popping off, moving around and being a nuisance.

you could use a pir switch there, to make it operate on auto on-off there.

5 minute epoxy would work as a sealant as well, i never have good luck making silicon smooth

Just my 2 cents worth for anyone who likes hot glue for hobby work. If you warm the pieces/surface you are bonding to with a heat gun or similar tool, the glue adheres to porous surfaces MUCH better. You're a lot less likely to end up with a blob of glue that did little more then take a mold of the surface it was on, let alone adhere to it!
@Graham_Langley

Agreed. On something like aluminium so much heat will get pulled out of the glue at the interface it will hardly bond at all.

I thought silicone caulk used acetic acid for curing, which can corrode copper.

For electronics and other sensitive uses there a 'neutral cure' variety that doesn't. But the one John uses is an acetoxy cure one.
@tookitogo

Graham Langley Well yes, but that's not caulk. Wasn't this just ordinary caulk? I don't think the silicone adhesives and potting compounds for electronics come in caulking gun tubes.

+Antonio Tejade They do and I've used them many times. Just look for 'neutral cure' or 'non-actetoxy'.

Graham Langley But I don't mean just neutral-cure caulk, I mean the stuff actually made for electronics use.

We found the same sealant was sold in different dispensers for different industries under different names. So we went with the cheapest, which was in a sealant gun pack. Silicone potting stuff - the fluid stuff that flows around things - is a different matter.

A fun project but I'd be amazed if you couldn't find a ready made product with better weather-proofing for less money on ebay or Amazon.

Less money yeah, but waterproof in Chinese must mean something else as those cheap LED outside lights never last more than a year for me.

Silicone is rain proof but most certainly not weather proof. Id use CT1 or electrical isolating gel.

How long do these particular LED strips last? My experience with similar "water resistant" Chinese LED strips has been very poor. They never last long before led's start to go out or begin flickering.

I was also wondering about this, in my experience it's only the strips with the 'waterproof' plastic that go yellow.

Hot glue with acid cure type silicone doesn't exactly like each other, the hot glue tends to deteriorate in a matter of days, and some extremely tacky oily liquid stuff tends to form on the surface the hot glue, separating the two materials... I don't know if that is because the kind of hot glue I used, or any type(I've ised 2 type, one that has a clear appearance and has a lower melting point, and one that has a foggier appearance, is harder, and has somewhat higher melting point), but it happened to me, so I would not advise using them together... :S

I'm sorry John but I doubt I'm only one that thinks this is a bit of a botch. My first thought on how to do this was to look at fitting an end-firing G4 LED bulb into one arm of a 90° conduit box fixed to the pillar above the lock, pointing downwards.
