In 1978-1980 before Drummer John Bonham died, I used to get in trouble because my rating list of Led Zeppelin Albums was quite different from the list of many Led Zeppelin fans because: 1) Jazz and Classical are my first loves. 2) I'm a Tenor Sax player who can play Bass Guitar and dabbled in acoustic guitar. 3) It took me until my 40s to get used to Robert Plant's vocalisms (though he sounds pretty good on the first album). 4) Drummer John Bonham's loudness on drums is a bit much. I much preferred Keith Moon. 5) From the period, I liked the first 2 incarnations of Deep Purple, the Who, Jeff Beck Group and Cream better as bands, though Jimmy Page himself I like (and I have no complaints about John Paul Jones). So, keep in mind that all of our lists are subjective! 🙂 1) Led Zeppelin I 2) Led Zeppelin IV 3) Led Zeppelin III 4) Physical Graffiti 5) House of the Holies 6) Led Zeppelin II 7) In Through The Outdoor 8) Presence 9) Coda Probably the most obnoxious rating for most Zeppers is where I place I put Led Zeppelin II on the list. Some fans would start yelling at me back in the day. But, its all just personal taste. I really couldn't stand what they did to Howling' Wolf's Killing Floor. I found Whole Lotta Love tedious. Jimmy Page plays a sloppy solo on Heartbreaker, though Living' Loving' Maid makes up for it. Ramble On is good, but the Gollum reference used to make me laugh. Plant's lyrics essentially tells the story that Gollum ate his girlfriend, so its time to Ramble On. Hehehe. The Levee Breaks and Moby Dick are fine. Lastly, I thought Led Zeppelin III was a near masterpiece. But, not to hardcore Zeppelin fans. Your list is just as good as mine. Remember that!

Strange that you said Bonham was a bit too loud for you then picked the first album as number one. That's where his drumming is the loudest. On the first album, I find the two Dixon blues covers tedious. I Cant Quit You and You Shook Me and thats what keeps me from giving it top marks. Not good songs at all those two. Zep came up with far better stuff themselves.

Led Zeppelin ranking lists are fascinating to me--you don't necessarily have consensus top picks. I know people who like each of the albums as their respective top choices (maybe not Coda, being a comp). For what it's worth, here's mine: 1. Physical Graffiti 2. Houses of the Holy 3. Led Zeppelin III 4. Led Zeppelin IV 5. Led Zeppelin 6. Led Zeppelin II 7. In Through the Out Door 8. Coda 9. Presence I find that all LZ albums have their weak spots. Physical Graffiti could do without a couple of tracks on disc two (Sick Again, Boogie with Stu--both decent enough as b-sides). HotH has D'yer Ma'kr, which I dislike far more than any of the others (I love The Crunge). III has Hats off to Harper, so unnecessary. And IV has Four Sticks, which, try as I might, I can;t get into at all. Coda serves as a great 'coda' to their studio years--some of those tracks aren't great, but they belong here. Presence, to me, is just not a good album--LZ or otherwise. Achilles Last Stand and Nobody's Fault But Mine are killer, but there is nothing else even remotely up to par with their ability. For Your Life, Candy Store Rock... just awful, both worse than anything on Coda, I think! And lastly, I think LZ II is propped up by Whole Lotta Love and Thank You. Beyond that, I find a lot of the notable hits are just okay (Ramble On annoys me. Heartbreaker is okay but Living Loving Maid is terrible. The Lemon Song is just there. Moby Dick is fine for what it is, but not something you want to hear over and over again.)

That's a good list, it is a little different than mine. Although my list is likely different than most. My Favorite band in the world is Led Zeppelin, which makes a very tough ranking into an almost impossible ranking, as I can listen to any of their albums at just about any time. Having said that, my go to, is Physical Graffiti which is my all time favorite album in rock music. 9. Coda 8. In Through The Outdoor 7. Houses Of The Holy 6. I 5. III 4. Presence 3. II 2. IV 1. Physical Graffiti I know that my ranking of Presence in 4th place is different than most. However, I find that songs like For Your Life & Tea For One to be a personal snapshot of the circumstances around recording of this album, with Plant being in a wheelchair for part of it singing / writing lyrics. If not for pressure from Peter Grant and Jimmy Page to get a record out, Plant would have been at home recovering with his wife and family. Then there is the absolute master piece Achilles Last Stand, need I say more.
